Shameful Stephenson booted out by Sevenoaks for spitting at referee

Wednesday 04th March 2009

ANTON STEPHENSON played his last ever game for Sevenoaks Town last night – as he allegedly spat at referee Jonathan Stone immediately after being red-carded for foul and abusive language directed at the Ashford official, writes Stephen McCartney.

The shameful incident happened immediately as the half-time whistle sounded, with Sevenoaks Town losing 2-0 at Beckenham Town in a Bulmers Cider Kent League game at Eden Park Avenue.

Sevenoaks’ manager, Simon Jones, speaking to www.sevenoakstownfc.org, insisted the player will never play for the Greatness Park club again.

"We cannot condone things like that, and he won’t play for the club again," he said in a statement.

"He is an excellent player, but he had a shocker tonight, and you cannot do things like that on a football field."

Struggling Beckenham Town went into the half-time interval two goals up, courtesy of Charley Side’s brace, but former Maidstone United player Errison Ahwan pulled a goal back through a fine individual finish and then made the second for substitute Marcus Elliott.

But Beckenham sealed the points three minutes from time when defender Adam Holder rose unchallenged to head in a corner three minutes from time.
