Jahmal Howlett-Mundle: Homophobic comments will not get under my skin or throw me off my game and I do understand it will happen again

SHEPPEY UNITED centre-half Jahmal Howlett-Mundle was subject to an alleged homophobic slur during the club’s 4-1 win over Tower Hamlets in The FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round this afternoon.

The 24-year-old part-time footballer told his team-mates that he was bisexual before a pre-season friendly against Ashford United on Tuesday 27 July 2021.

The club have played two league games without incident but this is the first time that Howlett-Mundle has been subject to abuse since his brave announcement, which his club broadcast by video over social media.

“Real shame that a Tower Hamlets player was narrow-minded enough to call me a “gay pussy” during the game,” said Howlett-Mundle.

“Comments such as those will not get under my skin or throw me off my game and I do understand it will happen again.

“So glad that my Sheppey United team-mates and management supported me during and after the game and I would like to believe something will be done about this by The FA  and the Southern Counties East Football League by following up on this incident in the hope that it will help to eradicate homophobia within football.”

The two clubs both play in the Southern Counties East Football League Premier Division - the ninth-tier of English football.

Tower Hamlets Football Club responded to Howlett-Mundle’s message on social media.

“This has just come to our attention. Please can you give us the number of the player's shirt so we can investigate and take matters into our own hands.

“As a club we want you to feel we do not tolerate this type of action and will take this very seriously. Please personally message us.”

A statement from Sheppey United added: “Sheppey United Football Club are in full support of our defender Jahmal Howlett-Mundle who was subjected to verbal abuse whilst playing a game of football this afternoon.

“The club will welcome any investigation and will also provide support to Jahmal, who is obviously very upset with the situation.

“Sheppey United Football Club strongly condemn homophobic abuse and are totally committed to the elimination of all forms of discrimination.  There is no place for it in our game or society as a whole.”

Meanwhile, all five goals were scored in the second half.  Sheppey United raced into a 4-0 lead, courtesy of Billy Bennett, two from James Jeffrey and one from Michael Hagan.  The East Londoners scored a late consolation through Wale Odedoyin’s third goal of the season.
