Sheppey United sign Michael Phillips: I think Sheppey is a sleeping giant, which has the foundations to reach the National League one day
SHEPPEY UNITED manager Ernie Batten has unveiled the signing of former Ashford United midfielder Michael Phillips, 36.
Not to be confused with the current Maidstone United player, aged, 21, the elder Phillips has decided to sign for the Southern Counties East Football League Premier Division club.
“I came down to a game last season and joined in wit the team before the game,” Phillips told www.sheppeyunitedfc.co.uk.
“I had a chat with Ernie and Jono Richardson and was really impressed with the club.
“I think Sheppey is a sleeping giant, which has the foundations to reach the National League one day.
“I played in some really tough games against Sheppey in my time with Ashford United. I always remembered the great support and I really enjoyed playing on that pitch.
“When I spoke to Jono about signing, I jumped at the chance!”
Sheppey United finished in seventh-place last season and Phillips said: “I’m confident we will be challenging for promotion this season.”
Meanwhile, Sheppey United have appointed Marcel Nimanini as the manager of their newly-created Suburban League team.
Nimanini grew up playing in the youth and reserve sides of Folkestone Invicta and Ashford Town.
“Alongside my playing days, I began my coaching career with Hythe Town youth teams and then moved on to first team coach at Tunbridge Wells, where I have coached for the last three seasons, working with first team manager Jason Bourne.
“Alongside club coaching, as a PE teacher, I run school football teams.
“I believe players would describe me as a very enthusiastic and committed coach who has a huge passion to work with players of all ages.
“I am looking forward to pre-season to meet the new players, embrace the culture of Sheppey United FC and of course add my part to the club.
“I encourage all players aged 16 plus who have the determination required to improve their technical side, tactical understanding of the game and their physical attributes to come along to our trials and work with us.
“As a coach, I place huge emphasis on the above areas and all training sessions are designed around physical, tactical and technical development. I’m very much looking forward to being part of the club.”
