Showdown talks force Munday to look for more quality

STRUGGLING Whitstable Town manager Mark Munday says he has been encouraged by the club to bring fresh faces to maintain the club’s Ryman League status, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Oystermen face a make-or-break month with games against teams in the bottom six - and Munday is desperate for his side to pick up a good points haul against Walton Casuals, Horsham YMCA, Eastbourne Town and a double header with Ashford Town.

Munday was very upbeat following his side’s 4-1 defeat at Tonbridge Angels in the second round of the Championship Manager Cup last night – a scoreline that flattered Tommy Warrilow’s side.

The Angels stormed into a 2-0 lead inside the opening seven minutes, through Carl Rook and Jean-Michal Sigere – and debutant Liam Baker had a goal-ruled out for offside as Whitstable were played off the park during the opening twenty minutes.

However, Whitstable Town recovered from this early set back and pulled a goal back through Sam Denly’s header – and put in a spirited second half performance – before the Angels grabbed two late goals through Baker and Sigere.

“We can build on performances like that and take heart from it,” Munday told www.kentishfootball.co.uk last night.

“But we’ve got to play at that level week in, week out for a sustained period to work our way up the league.

“Performances like that dictate we shouldn’t be at the bottom of the league, but we are and we deserve to be there at the moment.”

Club officials met on Monday night to tell Munday that quality players must be brought into Belmont Road to maintain the club’s present league status.

And winning their next five games will ensure the friendly club climb away from the relegation zone.

He said: “The next (five) games will shape our season because we’ve got Walton Casuals, Eastbourne, we’ve got Horsham YMCA.  We did have Chipstead but that’s now re-arranged.  We’ve got Ashford twice so there’s four sides directly above us, not out of reach and those games will shape our season and give us a springboard to survival, which is what the club want.”

Munday hopes last night’s spirited display against Ryman Premier League side Tonbridge Angels was not a one-off and his current squad put in the same kind of performances against the teams struggling with them towards the foot of the table.

“We’ve been encouraged to bring in two or three new faces,” revealed Munday, after news about Monday’s showdown meeting broke.

“I’m looking at those with a bit more experience at this level and a little bit more consistency at this level.

“But if we perform like that for the next five to ten games with the current people then we may not need anyone else.

“It may be just one or two to add to the squad and provide a little bit of quality but the energy levels and the freshness we had tonight was encouraging.

“You’re competing in a competitive world at the moment, finances and money do play a big factor in trying to bring people down.

“We’re not talking about thousands, we’re talking about hundreds, as the people at Whitstable are very sensible in that respect.

“I’m not going to sign people for the sake of it, but if they (my current squad) give me that (performance) every week, do you need to look elsewhere?

“The first (thirteen) games they’ve obviously not given us that and can you trust them now and expect to do that week in week out.

“I hope they surprise me! If they do, brilliant!  If they don’t, we are looking for new faces.”
