Silver medalist gets Chatham youngsters on their marks
Monday 15th March 2010
FIFTY members of the Chatham Town junior section (boys and girls aged between 8-16), including their parents will take part in the Maidstone Road Mile in aid of Sport Relief 2010 on Saturday.
All the competitors will be required to complete three laps of the outside of the Maidstone Road Sports Ground before finishing the final part of their journey on the half-way line of the main pitch.
The event will be started at one o’clock by Paul Nihill MBE, who now lives in Medway, who won a silver medal at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics for the 50km walk and is the grandfather of current Chatham Town striker Rob Denness, who scored a cracking winning goal at Ramsgate at the weekend.
As well as starting the event, Paul will also be presenting commemorative souvenirs to all those who complete the course during the half time interval of the Ryman One South game between Chatham Town and Fleet Town – kick off 3:00pm.
As well as that, the club are hoping to have a local band playing before the game and will have the customary collection bucket doing the rounds as is the case on days like this during the afternoon.
Meanwhile, Alex O’Brien’s side welcome Godalming Town to Maidstone Road on Tuesday night and as a belated Mothers Day present the club would like to invite all the Mum’s of Medway to attend the game, as long as they bring their sons of daughters with them and the both of you will gain entrance for just five points.
The first team have just won their last two league games and face a team chasing the play-off’s as the Chats bid for a hat-trick of wins for the first time this season.
