A strong finish to the season is our priority now, says Sittingbourne boss Nick Davis

SITTINGBOURNE manager Nick Davis says he wants his players to start getting on the scoresheet during their last four league games to the season.

The Brickies sit in sixteenth-place in the Ryman League Division One South table with 50 points from 42 games – ten points clear of the relegation zone.

They have claimed three goal-less draws in their last four league games, which also include a 3-0 defeat in Guernsey and a 0-0 draw at home to local rivals Faversham Town over Easter.

“We created three fantastic chances before going a goal down on the counter-attack at Guernsey,” said Davis.

“It wasn’t then until the final ten minutes when we had committed a third striker where we were undone with two great finishers, left by some gaps in us chasing and some tired legs late on, conceding in the 81^st and 90^th minute.

“Disappointed with the scoreline and it flattered Guernsey to say the least but other than us not putting the ball in the net we were really pleased with the commitment and togetherness my young side showed.

“They were by far the best footballing side we have played this season, technically very strong.

“On to Monday against Faversham and I was delighted once again with the desire and work-rate my side showed for the club.  To restrict them to a couple of half chances was a credit to us defensively considering they have scored 100 plus goals already this season was remarkable.

“I was told after we were only the third side to stop them scoring this season. I thought we were slightly the stronger side on the day with the better of the chances and was unlucky not to have taken all three points against a side sitting second in the league.

“The only down side has been we haven’t scored in four now. However, if we were not creating chances this would be more of an issue and I have no doubt we will add this to our play.

“We have now only lost two in 10 and are unbeaten in six at home, only conceding three during that time.

“It was my priority and biggest task, I think, when I took over was to turn the home form around. We have to be hard to beat, we have to make Woodstock our fortress and this will have a huge bearing on whatever we want to achieve going forward.

“Home form is key at any level. We have a young side and we are improving all the time.

“We had five teenagers in the sixteen with an average age of 22 on the field against Faversham. If we can keep the majority of this side with one or two additions and the experience some of the young lads have gained we will be in a decent place come pre-season.”

Davis takes his side to nineteenth-placed Chipstead on Saturday, before travelling to fourteenth-placed South Park next Tuesday.

Sittingbourne host eighth-placed Three Bridges for their final home game of the season (18 April), before completing their campaign with a trip to fourth-placed Merstham on 25 April.

Davis added: “A strong finish to the season is our priority now and hopefully to score a few goals would be nice, with one eye on next season.”
