This is the biggest game for the club in two years, says Sittingbourne boss Nick Davis

SITTINGBOURNE manager Nick Davis admits his side are the favourites in their FA Cup Second Qualifying Round tie against Hoddesdon Town tomorrow.

 

The Brickies lost their first game in nine when they went down to a 2-1 home defeat against fellow highflyers Dorking Wanderers, a newly-promoted side that are now in second-place in the Ryman League Division One South table on 21 points from 10 games, four points behind leaders Folkestone Invicta.

Sittingbourne have dropped down to eighth-place on 18 points from their ten league outings.

“Our run had to come to an end at some point and unfortunately it did against Dorking Wanderers on Tuesday night,” said Davis.

“It could have gone either way in all fairness and I think a draw would have been a fair result.

“I’m not sure we did enough to win the game but you have to take your chances when you’re on top which to be fair for us we have done lately.

“We have been clinical and maybe it was a game too far for us having five out injured and the relentless back-to-back games we have had.

“I said to the lads we should be proud of the run we have been on and if Dorking are competing for honours this year then we are not a million miles away.

“Yes, disappointing but this group have given me everything and if we can go on a run or two like that one, we will be in and around the leading pack.”

Sittingbourne welcome lower-league opposition in the shape of Hoddesdon Town in The FA Cup Second Qualifying Round tomorrow.

They play in the top-flight (Premier Division) of the Spartan South Midlands Football League and occupy a place in the top six with three wins, two draws and two defeats in the league.

“We have Hoddesdon tomorrow and is probably the biggest game for the club since the Staines game two years ago,” said Davis, after losing to the then Conference South side in the Third Qualifying Round.

“Financially for us it’s massive and for the potential of being in the third qualifying round draw on Monday.

“It’s going to be tough. We go in as favourites and that doesn’t often happen for us and so we have to make sure we continue to show the same hunger and desire we have done and hopefully get the desired result.

“We have had them watched and they are a threat going forward.  We have identified where we can get at them.”
