Sittingbourne snap up highly-rated goalkeeper Reed

Sunday 07th September 2008

SITTINGBOURNE have solved their goalkeeping crisis with the capture of Matt Reed, writes Stephen McCartney.

The former West Ham United goalkeeper impressed during his one and only season with Tonbridge Angels last term, having arrived from Walton Casuals.

But Reed disappeared off the radar immediately after the end of last season, but Brickies boss Gary Abbott has brought him out of the wilderness, giving him his Sittingbourne debut at Godalming Town - a side managed by much-travelled goalkeeper Chuck Martini - yesterday.

The Brickies won the game 3-2, courtesy of a last-gasp, stunning free-kick from Richard Brady, his second of the game and his fifth goal of the season. The other goal was scored from Dave Milton.

Reed is an excellent goalkeeper and was tipped by the Angels to make a return to professional football.

Sittingbourne secretary, Mr John Pitts, was certainly impressed with Reed’s debut at Weycourt.

“He certainly showed it Saturday and Gary (Abbott) wants a permanent goalkeeper and Reed is the man,” he told www.kentishfootball.co.uk.

Boss Abbott, whose side welcome newly promoted side Crowborough Athletic to Bourne Park tomorrow night, has been busy in the transfer market in recent days.

Ben Payne arrives on a dual-registration with Kent League side Slade Green, as has a striker from Welling United on the same terms.

Michael McLeary has been snapped up from Tonbridge Angels and Bryan Glover, who played yesterday, has re-signed from league rivals Croydon Athletic.

Joe Plant arrives from a junior side and the club are awaiting for international clearance for Michael Makasi, who’s last club was in Wales with Cwmbran Town.

Pacy winger, Sebastian Schoburg, who featured in last season's 6-2 win for Dulwich Hamlet over the Brickies last season, has also signed.
