MARGATE manager Iain O’Connell has announced the departure of four players from Hartsdown Park.
Defender Jack Haverson, midfielder Kieran Morris and striker Lloyd Blackman have all faced limited first-team opportunities last season.
“I’d like thank all three players for their hard work and support since I have been at the club,“ O’Connell told www.margate-fc.com.
“Whether they have been playing or not, they have all been very supportive and I appreciate that.”
Top scorer Blackman’s last performance in a Gate shirt was particularly significant as his 14th goal of the season was enough to beat Hastings and put the Blues in pole position to benefit from an anticipated relegation reprieve.
“It’s no secret that I’m looking to bring new players to the club,” added O’Connell, “but I also need to balance the budget so tough decisions have to be made.
“I would like to wish all three players the best of luck for the future.”
O’Connell has revealed that striker Leroy Huggins has also left the club - due to work commitments.
The much-travelled striker signed from Ryman League Division One North side VCD Athletic at the beginning of March and made an immediate impact, scoring four goals in his first six appearances for Margate.
“It wouldn’t have been my choice to lose Leroy,” said the Gate boss, “but he has found it difficult due to work commitments.
“I’d like to thank him for the great effort he put in while he was with us, and wish him all the best for the future.”
TONBRIDGE ANGELS boss Tommy Warrilow will face supporters following the club’s Suburban League clash against Wealdstone tomorrow.
The game kicks-off at 3pm, but Warrilow will meet the supporters in the Longmead Lounge at 5:30pm.
“It is intended that Tommy Warrilow and the board will outline plans for next season,” said club secretary Charlie Cole.
“I know that it is short notice, but I hope that as many as possible will be able to attend.”
CHATHAM TOWN are staging the Mark Green Thank You match at Maidstone Road on Bank Holiday Monday (3pm).
Admission to watch the Chatham Reds play the Chatham Blue Sox costs £5 (adults), £3 (oaps) and £1 (juniors). Turnstiles open at 1pm.
VCD ATHLETIC’S top-scorer Nick Hegley scooped both the player’s-player-of-the-year and management player-of-the-year awards with nine votes from 24 in the player’s award, beating left-back Jason Barton by one vote) and three votes from a possible seven in the management award.
Hegley has scored 13 goals in 46 appearances from left midfield which also saw him end up as top scorer and pick up the golden boot award at the club.
Hegley’s wonder-goal from 30 yards following a similar length dribble in the amazing 10 man 4-2 win over East Thurrock back in October is also considered by many to be the goal of the season so he is clearly a very worthy winner of both awards.
His left sided companion Barton did pick up the Supporters Player of the Year award however in only his first season at the club proving what a valuable acquisition he has been for the club since making his debut in the FA Cup defeat away to AFC Totton.
Barton’s committed displays in defence week in week out have been a feature of the Vickers campaign where it is difficult to remember a wide player who has caused him any problems. At the other end, Jason has proved to be an asset from set pieces with 7 goals from his 41 appearances.
Other milestones/awards are:
100 Appearances: James Tedder and Gary Cook
300 Appearances: Gary Ward
Clubman of the Year: Chris Cook
Supporter of the Year: John Ainsworth
