Someone's going to get a good hiding, warns Warrilow
Sunday 23rd August 2009
TONBRIDGE ANGELS boss Tommy Warrilow has warned one of his rivals that they will feel the full force of his side’s firepower, writes Stephen McCartney.
Despite opening their Ryman Premier League campaign with a home defeat against AFC Hornchurch, the Angels have won at both Cray Wanderers (3-1) and came away from Waltham Abbey with a 2-0 win, courtesy of goals from Jean Michal-Sigere and Scottish winger, Steve Ferguson.
“Very pleased with the result,” Warrilow told www.kentishfootball.co.uk tonight. “It was a difficult place to go to, very bumpy pitch, just one of those games, we were very patient.
“First half we saw out quite a strong wind against us. Second half we turned it around, broke them down and got our rewards.”
But Warrilow warned, “They’re going to upset some teams this year with their direct style of play.”
Waltham Abbey’s ground, meanwhile, didn’t create a good impression on the Tonbridge boss.
He said: “It’s one of those games, you get the three points and go home. It’s very flat out there. The main thing was to carry on from Tuesday night.
“We played well, the first half was flat, could have had a couple of goals. I said to the boys at half time to up the tempo.”
The Angels go into Tuesday night’s home game against Warrilow’s former club Horsham sitting in sixth place in the Ryman Premier League table.
“Even though we lost the first game of the season, we played really well,” said Warrilow. “We didn’t take our chances and came unstuck against Hornchurch.
“I expected us to play the way we are at the moment after about seven or eight games in. We’ve started very well, there’s bits to work on still but the season’s three games old.”
Warrilow expects another 500 plus appreciative crowd for the visit of Horsham, having played well on the road.
“We had a big crowd against Hornchurch,” he said. “I know we lost the game but I hope we impressed the people that turned up and played well on the day. They owned up to a smash and grab.
“The people at Tonbridge like good football. 500-odd people there and the performance would warrant them to come back and support what we’re doing down there.
“Two games on we’ve won them both. Sometimes you can play poorly and get a result. If we play like we did against Hornchurch week in, week out, we’re going to win more games than we lose.”
Some fans were fearing the worst following boardroom upheavals and a cut in playing budget.
“We’re not a million miles away,” added Warrilow. “If we start putting these chances away that we’re creating, someone’s going to get a good hiding some day.
“I’m really positive with the way we’re playing at the moment. It’s just frustrating we’re not putting htem away, but we’re working on it in training.”
Striker Carl Rook (flu) is expected to be well enough to face his former club.
