Star striker Jon Main shown door by Tonbridge Angels
Tuesday 15th May 2012
TONBRIDGE ANGELS boss Tommy Warrilow issued his retained list last night, with star striker Jon Main among four players to be shown the door. The Angels finished their inaugural campaign in Blue Square Bet (Conference) South in a respectable ninth place.
But Main, who scored two goals during an injury hit campaign, following his return to the club from AFC Wimbledon, winger Joe Benjamin and versatile brothers Ade and Tim Olorunda have all been told to find new clubs.
Warrilow, who has been told to cut his cloth accordingly, due to a budget cut next season, has made just one summer signing, bringing in striker George Purcell following his release from league rivals Dover Athletic, and has fourteen first team players on the books at Longmead Stadium at present.
The Angels boss issued a statement on www.tonbridgeangelsonline.co.uk to speak about his squad movements.
“With our presentation dinner been and gone, I have spoken to the remaining players regarding next season,” he said.
“It has been well documented that some players had to be released and it is the worst part of the job as a manager carrying this out.”
Warrilow revealed that Main, Benjamin, Ade Olorunda and Tim Olorunda cannot be offered terms for next season.
He said: “They are all top lads who have been a pleasure to manage and I wish them well and thank them for all their commitment and effort whilst at the club.
“These are all good players who will find a club easily and I will always welcome them back if ever our situation changes.”
Full-backs, Jon Heath and Danny Walder have agreed terms to stay at the club.
Warrilow added: “I am more than happy with the pair of them in the full-back areas.
“We spoke openly about the importance of staying injury free because next year’s squad will be smaller and we can’t afford to have players missing.
“The pair of them are more than capable of playing at this level and I have no issues on that front.
“I am delighted to keep the back four/five together that finished the second half of the season looking a lot stronger and with a good pre-season together will only get stronger.”
Warrilow also confirmed that Robbie Kember will play a part next season, although the midfielder must curb his ill-discipline.
He said: “Robbie didn’t have the best of luck when he tore his thigh muscle which finished his season.
“I felt he was doing a good job for the side after being patient on the sidelines for a while.
“He covers a few positions and has played this level before. He knows we are going with a smaller squad next season and realises the suspensions he picked up last season can’t happen again next season.”
Warrilow revealed he is happy with his current squad.
He said: “I will not be looking to add to the signing of George Purcell unless somebody of his quality comes along, can fit into our structure and strengthen our squad.
“The squad was changed throughout last season and I was more than happy with our second half of the season performances to start with the same set of lads.”
Meanwhile, Ben Judge, 35, insists he is not going to retire and the former Bromley central defender is keen to play a key part again next season.
