Stones release Royston
Tuesday 28th July 2009
MAIDSTONE UNITED have confirmed that they have released central defender Ryan Royston, writes Stephen McCartney.
The fans' favourite, who joined The Stones for the second time last March from Ramsgate, had initially been re-signed on a non-contract basis for the new season back in May.
The Sidcup based defender, who in recent years has also turned out for Cray Wanderers and Thamesmead Town, is expected to find himself a new club in time for the new season.
Maidstone United’s strict budget restrictions this season and the exciting development of young central defenders Tom Parkinson and James Peacock to compliment the experience of Peter Hawkins, joint managers Lloyd Hume and Walker were left to make the difficult decision.
Walker, speaking to www.maidstoneunited.co.uk yesterday, said: “I have spoken to Ryan and he understands the reasons behind this decision. Naturally he is very disappointed to be leaving but he thinks that he will be able to fix himself up with another club before the new season begins."
"Ryan has a very special connection to this club and to its' supporters due to the massive impact he had in our promotions from both the Kent League and Isthmian League Division 1 South and for that we will always be grateful to him. Personally I can only wish Ryan the very best for his future career."
The Stones continue their pre-season programme with a trip to Chatham Town tonight.
Alex O’Brien’s side have beaten two Kent League sides in Holmesdale (2-1) and Norton Sports (5-0) and a big crowd is expected for tonight’s local derby.
