Striker Ian Pulman targets 30 goals to keep Whitstable Town up
Monday 21st March 2011
IAN Pulman says he is targeting a goal a game to keep Whitstable Town in the Ryman League.
The striker took his goalscoring tally to 24 for the season with both Whitstable’s goals in the 2-1 win at Worthing at the weekend and the hot-shot has set himself a target to ensure the club retain their current league status.
Whitstable are in nineteenth place in the Ryman League Division One South table with 36 points from 35 games - six points clear of the relegation zone, although Corinthian-Casuals do have a couple of games in hand and arrive at The Belmont on the final day of the season.
“My aim is thirty, I have twenty-one in the league and three more in the cups and to score thirty for the season is what I want by the end of April,” Pulman told www.whitstabletownfc.co.uk.
“I was delighted with the two I scored against Worthing, both were scored inside a minute and both with my left foot and I was delighted to hit the back of the net.
“I have to say though that the lads at the back were immense, the way they defended set us up for a great win against a side we do struggle against.”
Pulman added: “Look, anyone who watches me play week in week out knows that I love to score goals, that’s what I’m in the side for, and the pressure that comes with the team relying on a striker to hit the back of the net is what drives me.
“But I also know that like any striker I can’t do it on my own, I need a player alongside me who I can feed off; and from the mid-fielders balls threaded that are through at pace or played over my shoulder.”
Manager Peter Nott brought Brandon Hall in from work-experience from Charlton Athletic and he was pleased with the goalkeeper’s debut and he will be competition for another young keeper, Shaun Smith.
“The young lad did well,” said Nott. “He made a couple of good saves at really important times, he did hold his hand up for their goal though. I think he knows he should have come for the cross.
“But Brandon will be good for Smithy. I rate Smithy as a great addition to the club, he is a real find at his age and to have two young keepers pushing each other for a place is good for the club.
“Now we have Brandon at the club and Smithy it will bring out the best in them and make both of them fight for the shirt each week.”
Whitstable welcome second-placed Metropolitan Police to The Belmont on Sunday, a game that has been put back a day and will kick-off at 1pm.
The Surrey outfit will claim top spot if they beat Chipstead on Wednesday and Whitstable - and Chatham Town - hope Eastbourne Town beat Corinthian-Casuals to wipe out one of their two games in hand.
And with this being the only game in Kent on the day, the club are looking forward to attracting a crowd of over 300 to the welcoming ground at Belmont Road.
Nott has challenged all home fans to give his side the backing they deserve and need to claim a vital three-points in their bid to beat the drop.
“On the road the Oysters have been our twelfth man, yet again on Saturday they were different class and they really do make the difference to the performance of the lads.
“But, and this is the strange thing, they are not making the same sort of noise at the Belmont. I spoke to a couple of them after the game and asked them to generate more noise at the Belmont like they do away.”
