Sutton will be a tough game, says Welling United boss Jamie Day
The unbeaten Wings lie in seventh-place in the Blue Square Bet South table after picking up one win and two draws from their first three games.
Day, who is ruled out with a back injury at present, saw his side come away from Tonbridge Angels with a point yesterday, but they suffered a major blow by losing striker Luis Cumbers to injury within the first couple of minutes at Longmead Stadium.
Cumbers’ replacement, Harry Baker, gave the Wings a 50th minute lead, but Frannie Collin scored his and Tonbridge Angels’ third goal of the season from the penalty spot to restore parity.
Day revealed: “Joe (Healy) and Ross (Lafayette) were both up on Friday night ill, so there’s not a lot we could do with that, and I’ve still got a back injury.
“The boys have done well to dig in and get a point, but Joe and Ross have been outstanding in the last couple of games.
“Hopefully we’ll have Ross and Joe back for Monday to strengthen the squad.
Day added: “We haven’t got the budget to just go out and get players, but I’ve got a good squad of players, albeit carrying a few knocks, and we should have enough for Monday.”
Welling United have the upper hand over Sutton United ahead of the Park View Road showdown.
The Wings came away from Gander Green Lane with a 2-1 win in the play-off semi-final, before playing out a goal-less draw at Park View Road to book a place in the final.
But Lee Noble’s fourth minute strike sent neighbours Dartford into the Blue Square Bet Premier in front of a packed house at Princes Park.
Day said: “Sutton will be a tough game. Last year they came to us in the play-offs, sat in and made it hard, but we’ve got enough in the squad to get some more points on the board.
“They are a good side and we’ve played against them a number of times now. They know us as well as we know them, but we want to keep on this run and I think they’ll come to us with the same mentality.
“It will be down to us to break them down, but it won’t be an easy game, as I think they’ll be up there at the end of the season.”
Relegated Bath City are at the summit after three games and they are one of three teams on seven points, the others being Boreham Wood and Salisbury City.
Day says that this season’s Conference South is as strong as ever.
“There are a lot of teams this year similar in terms of squad and strength.
“I think that the team that can grind out the most results, coming to places like Longmead and getting the points consistently will be the one that wins it.
“All the teams have that slip up and defeat in them, but the one who can bounce back and maintain their form will be there. I need to make sure it is us.”
