Take a punt on someone who is hungry to succeed, says Staplehurst third-team boss

JOHN AUSTIN says it’s difficult for lower-league managers to break into coaching at Kent League level or above, writes Stephen McCartney.

Austin has been in charge of the third-team at Kent County League Division One East outfit Staplehurst & Monarchs United for the past two years and wants to make the giant leap up the pyramid.

His side finished in seventh place (out of 10) in the third division of the Maidstone & District League - but insists he deserves a chance to impress.

“The problem I’m facing is, although highly ambitious and confident of my ability, without a proven management or playing career, it’s difficult to get recognised with senior teams,” Austin admitted when speaking to www.kentishfootball.co.uk.

“It’s snot just at this level of football this problem is evident.  Throughout football you see managers who have failed or not reached their club’s targets, re-appointed at different clubs.

“Why? Because they’ve either been good players or know someone in the game.

“For someone like myself (and I’m sure there are others) it can be frustrating trying to get your foot in the door and given the opportunity to show what your capabilities are.

“I can understand that clubs need to show their supporters and players that they are ambitious by appointing a known personality can do this.

“But, please clubs of Kent, take a punt with someone who is hungry to succeed and is just asking for a chance.”
