Over the next few days we've got to decide where we go from here, says Thamesmead Town boss Terry Spillane
THAMESMEAD TOWN boss Terry Spillane has promised to find a remedy to the club’s slump in form recently.
The Mead have slipped down to sixth-place in the Ryman League Division One North table on 26 points from 14 games after suffering back-to-back defeats to Cray Wanderers and Cheshunt during the past week.
“We can’t keep making the same mistakes we are making week-in-week-out and we’ve got to stop that if we want to be where we want to be,” said Spillane, who is targeting a play-off place.
“We can’t afford to let in what we call weak goals week-in-week-out. We’ve got to find a remedy for it.
“Over the next few days I’ve got to sit down with Tony (Faulkner) and Darran (George) and decide where we go from here because clearly at the moment we’re just not (defending properly).
“We started off so well keeping clean sheets. It’s clearly a problem at the moment for us, so it’s something we’ve got to remedy.
“We’ve got players coming back. Derek Duncan’s coming back, Tommy Spillane’s coming back, who at the start of the season was a part of the back four that let in one goal in about four or five games or something like that.
“Jay Porter’s come in and done well, I’m not knocking him, he’s done extremely well.
“We’ll analyse who’s coming back and what we need to change anywhere and make that decision then.”
Spillane is another manager who has voiced his disapproval of Ryman League clubs playing the same team twice over a two week period.
“I don’t agree with it, it’s not something that I’d choose,” he said.
“I don’t know why it’s happened or whoever thought of it. Sometimes you have to try things, maybe the League has tried it to see what kind of reaction it got.
“If I had a choice, the vote would be no.
“You get teams who go on a five, six, seven, eight unbeaten run or vice versa and you’re playing them twice in that area. A few months later a new manager, new personnel, it happened to Cray last year.
“If you played them twice in the first month you’d get six points. If you played them in the last month you’d get no points.
“I don’t know the thinking about it! I’m old school. I like to play every one before Christmas and play everyone after. I’m a bit of a dinosaur I suppose. Maybe that’s the way the League’s going to do it, I don’t know.”
Meanwhile, Tuesday night’s trip to Harlow Town has been postponed so they can prepare for their FA Cup Fourth Qualifying Round tie at National League side Braintree Town next Saturday.
The Mead are next in league action next Saturday when they host Wroxham at Bayliss Avenue.
Meanwhile, the club’s £30 family season ticket for league games only has been a hit this season as the Mead have confirmed that home crowds have increased by 98.33% this season.
