Thamesmead Town boss Keith McMahon dedicates cup win to club stalwart

THAMESMEAD TOWN manager Keith McMahon says he’s dedicated his side’s 3-0 home win over holders Hythe Town last night to club stalwart Mark Gray, who sadly passed away hours before the game.



“It’s upset us quite a bit to be honest. It’s devastated the club,” said McMahon.

“Mark was one of the club stewards and public address announcer and close friend so last night’s 3-0 win was for him too.”

Hythe Town won the Kent Senior Cup for the very first time in their history last season, when Scott Porter’s side defeated Kent League side Erith Town, followed by three Conference clubs in the shape of Ebbsfleet United, Dover Athletic and Dartford, but they crashed to a 3-0 defeat in the second round tie at Bayliss Avenue last night.

Goals from Lea Dawson, Stuart Zanone and Ashley Probets ensured McMahon’s players made it a fitting tribute to Mr Gray.

Thamesmead Town chairman Terry Hill issued the following statement on the club’s website.

“Mark had not been well for sometime and spent quite a bit of time in hospital before Christmas.

“It comes as a complete shock to us because we all thought he was starting to turn the corner and we were looking forward to seeing him back at Thamesmead.

“Mark was a good friend to everyone at Thamesmead, always laughing and joking and will be sadly missed at the club.

“We will remember him as a big man, a big softy who loved his football. He was Thamesmead through and through.

“All of us at Thamesmead Town Football Club would like to send our condolences to Mark’s wife Simone and his son Luke.

“Before the home game with Ilford on Saturday, please join us in a minute’s silence in memory of Mark’s life.”
