The chairman wants to get out of this league, says Huntley

BECKENHAM TOWN boss Jason Huntley says the club’s new chairman has adopted a professional approach to affairs at Eden Park Avenue, writes Stephen McCartney.

Huntley’s side have picked up three points from their opening two Bulmers Cider Kent League games of the season as last Monday’s 2-1 win at newboys Fisher came on the back of an opening 1-0 home defeat to much-fancied Faversham Town.

Beckenham finished last season in the bottom three last season, which was unacceptable for Huntley’s standards, and with a new chairman on board in Chris McCarthy, things are looking up.

"He’s been very good since he’s come in," Huntley told www.kentishfootball.co.uk following his win at Champion Hill last Monday night.

"He’s organised everything off the field, organised our charity game getting all the pro players. Everything’s totally different.

"The players, all they bring are their boots, their toiletries are given to them home and away so basically they turn up with their boots and their boot bag.

"One thing he has been let down, all their tracksuits should have been here last Thursday but it was held up.

"He’s got good ideas about us going forward. He wants us to get out this league and he’s got a few sponsors coming forward."

Whilst Eden Park Avenue is a modest venue, although it boasts one of the best playing surfaces in Kent, Huntley revealed that "we’ve had people down there already to measure up for a new stand, with the criteria of 150 seats," and that outside toilets and a covering from the changing rooms to the pitch is on the list of ground improvements.

Huntley also insists that former England international Teddy Sheringham WILL turn out for the club in their FA Vase ties, starting against Wealden next month.

Speaking about the veteran striker, who was a studio guest alongside former Welling United player Andy Townsend for England’s 2-2 draw in Holland last night, Huntley said it was "very, very likely" that the Champions League winner would don the red shirt.

"I think you’ll find he’s going to sign for the Vase (games) at the moment," said Huntley.

"I’m trying to work on him for the Kent League (games) but he’s a bit of a busy man at the moment as he’s got media work.

"We’ve got a good chance of getting him for the Vase ones. Getting to Wembley? Lovely - but it’s a long way off!"

Huntley takes his side to Winch’s Field to play Norton Sports on Saturday, and the former Stansfeld boss is expecting a tough encounter.

"They’re a tough team to play Norton Sports," he warned. "There normally physical (but) I’m relishing the fact going there. It’s a good game to get out of the way early.

"I’ve got players back for Saturday’s game, which is pleasing me."

Huntley was forced to play a 3-5-2 formation at Fisher earlier in the week, which was won courtesy of a Danny Bleach powerful far post header and an 89th minute James Holder volley against a spirited Fisher side making their debut in the division.

The Becks boss hopes left-back Michael Ebanks has recovered from his foot injury - and that Durrant Jemmott has recovered from a bout of swine flu in time to be able to travel to the coast.
