The FA Carlsberg Vase Second Round Draw

Monday 06th October 2008

The draw for the second round of the FA Carlsberg Vase was made at Soho Square earlier today, writes Stephen McCartney.

With 128 sides left in the competition, there are only three Bulmers Cider Kent League sides still on the road to Wembley.

Croydon should ease past a Mile Oak side, that are currently sitting in the bottom six in the second tier of the Sussex County League, at the Croydon Sports Arena.

Although VCD Athletic and Tunbridge Wells face tougher opposition on Saturday, 15th November.

Vickers, who start their Vase campaign at this round, welcome a Mildenhall Town side that are sitting in tenth place in the Eastern Counties League, although they’ve played less games than everyone else.

Tunbridge Wells face a 256-mile round trip to play a Christchurch side that are currently ninth in the Wessex League.

Wells’ management team of Mike Robbins and assistant Martin Larkin are looking forward to the lengthy trip to the Hurn Bridge Sports Ground next month.

“That’s about as far as we could have been drawn in this round, isn’t it?” joked manager Robbins, when speaking to www.tunbridgewellsfc.co.uk.

“That’s almost a sleep-over isn’t it? It’ll get us ready for the travelling if we do go through to the later rounds, that’s for sure!

“We’ll go there and give them a good game - but if we bring them back here, then they’ll have quite a journey to make for a Tuesday night replay.”

Assistant manager Larkin added: “I’m very excited by the draw. The guys will appreciate being able to play someone from a different league.

“It will certainly be a challenge away from home as that is a strong league, but we’ve got connections, and we’ve got some time to be taking a look at them.”

Larkin was referring to Robbins’ time coaching down at Barnstable Town.
