The honeymoon period is over - it's now about results, says Sam MacNeil

Friday 23rd November 2012
Sam MacNeil, the manager of Kent Football United, has bolstered his squad ahead of tomorrow’s home game against Lydd Town.

MacNeil has signed Romaine Atkinson, Jeffrey Dankwa, 18, Jerry Antwi, 20, and Otis Taylor.

He has also fought off the likes of higher-league club’s Chessington & Hook and Dorking to bring former manager Mike Morgan back to the club as a defensive player.

MacNeil explained: “Romaine Atkinson is an attacking midfielder with pace, power and finishing ability to work with Stephen Wetherley, who has scored two in two since his move from Bridon Ropes.

“Jerry Antwi and Jeffrey Dankwa will add to our defensive options with Otis Taylor moving into central midfield.

“Mike Morgan has vast amounts of experience and will make us more solid at the back with his presence, experience and ability.  It’s a great signing for the club.   To beat Dorking and Chessington & Hook to his signature shows a lot about our club as an attractive proposition for players.”

The Crayford based club lie in fourteenth-place (of seventeen sides) in the Kent Invicta League table, with three wins and two draws from 12 games.

They face Lydd Town tomorrow, a side that are one place higher, with four wins and three draws from 14 games.

But MacNeil is targeting a top-five finish, despite being sixteen-points behind fifth-placed side Seven Acre & Sidcup and hopes his new signings will tighten up his defence, having shipped 30 goals in the league this season.

“It’s time for people to take us seriously this season,” said MacNeil.

“We have made big steps off the pitch with the additions of the physio company, gym opening on training nights and personnel added to the squad.

“We have a new relationship with VLM Massage Clinic, who will be providing full senior team physio coverage both at training and match-days.

“I want to welcome Sean Scolding as the new manager of our under 21s, who will form Kent Football United’s reserves next season.

“Since Joe Ford moved to Cray Valley we didn’t lose any players as they all stayed committed and I know want to move up this league very quickly.

“We have used all resources possible to build on the playing squad and improve it and make us stronger.

“I want us now to push on as I still want to finish in the top five, which could be lucrative for any team who finishes there at the end of the season.

“The honeymoon period is over! It’s now about results.

“Our squad is now capable of taking on anyone head on as Ashford United saw last week.  It’s results time and nothing but a win tomorrow will leave me exiting VCD with a smile.”
