The record doesn't really mean much if we don't get out of the League, says Welling boss Jamie Day

WELLING UNITED boss Jamie Day says he wants to continue his side’s record breaking run to clinch promotion at the end of the season. The Wings broke the Conference South record on Saturday when they won their ELEVENTH successive League game by beating Dorchester Town 3-2 at Park View Road.
Their run began on Saturday, 3 November 2012 when they came away from Havant & Waterlooville with a single goal victory.
They then defeated long-standing league leaders Salisbury City by the same scoreline in their next League game.
League wins over Billericay Town (5-2), Eastleigh (3-1), Bromley (3-1), Hayes & Yeading United (3-0), AFC Hornchurch (3-0 and 4-0), Truro City (4-3) and Basingstoke Town (1-0) followed, before Saturday’s record breaking victory.
Welling United’s win away to Basingstoke Town on 26 January also surpassed the club’s own previous best record of nine wins on the spin.
That record was set across two seasons as Welling won their last eight games in Sunday League football in 1970-71 and then their first in Saturday football on the opening day of the 1971-72 season, beating Faversham Town’s reserves 1-0 in their first Metropolitan London League fixture.
The run was ended with a 1-1 draw at Muirhead Sports.
The Southern League winning side of 1985-86 won twelve of their last thirteen games, but the wins were split in a sequence of seven and five. Ironically the game the club failed to win was a 3-3 draw at Crawley Town which was the day they were confirmed as Champions.
Nowadays, the Wings remain in second-place in the Blue Square Bet (Conference) South table, having collected a total of sixteen wins and four draws from their 23 League outings, but are six points behind Salisbury City, although the Kent club have three games in hand.
Welling United finished last season in third place, behind Woking and Dartford, but they fell at the final hurdle when Lee Noble’s fourth minute goal sealed Dartford’s promotion to the Blue Square Bet (Conference) Premier in the play-off final.
Day said today that he wants his side to continue their excellent run of form, starting with Tuesday night’s home game against fifth-placed Boreham Wood.
The Hertfordshire side have won their last three games and are unbeaten in four.
“The League record is obviously nice to achieve and hopefully we can keep it going for a little longer,” said Day.
“The boys’ have showed good consistency during this time and really dug in when needed but the record doesn’t really mean much if we don’t get out of the League and that is our aim.
“The title race will be close this year as I think there will be a few teams in with a good chance come May so we have to keep grinding out results and see where it takes us.
“Hopefully the squad doesn’t get too thin as this could be a factor for us.”
But Day will be without goalkeeper Sam Mott on Tuesday because he has been selected for the England C squad to play Turkey at Dartford’s Princes Park Stadium in the International Challenge Trophy Semi-Final.
Mott is vying with Ebbsfleet United’s Preston Edwards for the number one jersey.
Jamie Turner is expected to deputise for Mott and Day added: “I’m really pleased for Motty, hopefully he enjoys it and gets to experience it again. It can only be a confidence booster for him.
“Boreham Wood will be a very tough game. They have some good footballers and in good form so it’s a game we need to be at our best if we are going to win.”
