There's no point beating Dulwich then losing to Hailsham, says Wells skipper Jason Bourne

TUNBRIDGE WELLS boss Martin Larkin warns against complacency ahead of his side’s FA Carlsberg Vase home tie against Sussex County League side Hailsham Town on Saturday, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Kent League side dumped Ryman League Division One South side Dulwich Hamlet out of the FA Cup at Champion Hill Stadium last night, courtesy of Keelan Mooney’s first half strike.

Larkin’s men were resilient during the 90 minutes against the south Londoners and a spirited backs-against-the-wall performance sent the Wells through to the first qualifying round and they can now look forward to a trip to Ryman Premier Leaguers Carshalton Athletic on 11 September.

All attention now turns to the FA Vase First Qualifying Round tie against Hailsham and Larkin wants to avoid slipping up against the struggling Sussex side.

“We need to freshen things up a little bit,” he told www.kentishfootball.co.uk, following his side’s giant-killing.

“We’ll get them training on Thursday, bring them back down to earth a little bit.  We’ll make sure they know all the basics and how we go about it and hopefully we’ll do well.

“We’ve built up a little momentum, we’re unbeaten for the month of August and we’re very happy about that and that’s four clean sheets in five competitive games, which is exceptional.  Keep a clean sheet on Saturday, we’ll win the game.

“The three rounds that they’ve drawn are all winnable games.  If we can come here and win away from home at Dulwich Hamlet we can win all those games and that gets us to the first round proper of the Vase and then you don’t know what happens!

“As I said to the players, the pressure’s off in a Cup game, you go and do what you want to do,  That’s how we let them play and it showed.”

Players were buzzing following their heroic win at Dulwich Hamlet - and skipper Jason Bourne told www.kentishfootball.co.uk that his team-mates must show the same desire against a Hailsham side that have started their campaign poorly.

Hailsham arrive at Culverden Stadium sitting second-from-bottom with one win and a draw from their opening seven games.

“We’ve got to be careful, we don’t disrespect them, we’ll show them a lot of respect,” said the 29-year-old right-back.

“That’s the test for us, can we go and beat the next team and go and beat Hailsham?

“That’s what Larks (Martin Larkin) will be saying to everyone.  We’ve just got to switch on and make sure we do the basics.

“There’s no point beating Dulwich and we go and lose to Hailsham or Lordswood or a Kent League side - that’s not progress.

“We’ve been defending well all season, we’ve kept four clean sheets against decent opposition.  It gives us a really nice platform, obviously we need to add the goals to that.

“Over the two legs over a decent Dulwich side we got four goals so it gives us some belief not only can we defend well, were more than capable of going and nicking a result.”
