The results will come, insists under-pressure Munday

RELEGATION threatened Whitstable Town manager Mark Munday was a frustrated man yesterday as his side stretched their winless run to eleven league games, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Oystermen, who have not scored in their last three games, have only picked up just one point during that time and remain rooted to the foot of the Ryman League Division One South table, after fellow strugglers Walton Casuals nicked a 1-0 win at Belmont Road.

If Whitstable fail to pick up points against fellow strugglers Horsham YMCA, Eastbourne Town and a double header with Ashford Town, then the club could make a return to the Kent League after just three seasons at this level.

Whitstable, who ended the game with ten men after Dan Tanner picked up a second yellow, were camped inside the Walton Casuals half during the first fifteen minutes, and was denied on numerous occasions by the visiting goalkeeper.

At the other end, Whitstable keeper Kevin Fewell had little to do as Whitstable were urged on by Munday, who asked his side to press the opposition and play at a higher tempo, as they did in their last game, a 4-1 flattering defeat at Ryman Premier League side Tonbridge Angels in the second round of the Championship Manager Cup.

Walton Casuals’ keeper made three excellent saves during the second half to frustrate a Whitstable side desperate to end their miserable run.

However, with just seven minutes remaining, Walton Casuals completed a smash-and-grab raid when Leon Yarnie was given too much space for the first time in the game and his low shot scraped in at the far post to beat Fewell.

Tanner then saw his second yellow, and by that time, Whitstable had suffered their eleventh league defeat (after 14 games), which left Munday a frustrated man again.

“It’s been the story of our season,” he admitted, when speaking to www.whitstabletownfc.co.uk afterwards.

“We were in the game, their keeper pulls off some great saves and we can’t capitalise on some good football.

“Very disappointed that we did not get something out of the game but we will keep going and the results will come.”
