TONBRIDGE ANGELS assistant manager Barry Moore insists his players owe their fans a positive performance in The FA Trophy tomorrow.

 

The Angels are still smarting from their 2-1 home defeat to second-from-bottom side Tooting & Mitcham United last weekend, a side that went down to a 1-0 home defeat to Folkestone Invicta in midweek.

“Tooting & Mitcham last Saturday was a huge disappointment after our display against Leiston a few days earlier,” said Moore, who saw the Angels end Leiston’s unbeaten run with a 2-1 home win in their previous outing.

Tonbridge Angels have slipped down to tenth-place in the Bostik Premier, with 21 points from 15 games. Steve McKimm’s men are three points adrift of the play-offs and a whopping 12 points adrift of leaders Dulwich Hamlet.

“We felt we had more than enough chances in the first half to win two games but a mixture of bad luck and poor finishing, we went in at half-time 1-1,” reflected Moore.

“Second half, I can say was probably the worst half of football we have played all season with a lack of desire and quality on the ball resulted in Tooting nicking a very luck goal on the break and to be fair after that Tooting sat behind the ball and defended well.

“The lads know it was not acceptable what happened on Saturday, as they are not excuse makers and take results like that personally.”

Tonbridge Angels host Jody Brown’s Heybridge Swifts tomorrow in The FA Trophy First Qualifying Round.

The Essex side play one league lower than Tonbridge and arrive at Longmead Stadium in the top eight in the Bostik North, with seven wins and a defeat from their eight league outings.

Heybridge Swifts are 11 points adrift of leaders Dereham Town but owing to their FA Cup run, which takes them to Exeter City in the First Round next weekend, they do have six games in hand.

“We have a very tough draw on Saturday against Heybridge Swifts, who so far this season are doing very well in the League and are still in The FA Cup,” said Moore.

“They score a lot of goals and will be confident, I’m sure of getting a win against us.

“We will do our homework on them and the boys have trained very well this week working on certain aspects that we feel we have been lacking lately.

“The FA Trophy is a cup we obviously want to progress in and we owe it to the board and fans after our early exit in The FA Cup.

“One thing I can guarantee to our fans is that the players were also gutted last Saturday and feel they owe our supporters a result tomorrow!”
