Top man Ian Jenkins gets on his marks for charity marathon run

Monday 13th February 2012
CRAY WANDERERS manager Ian Jenkins says he is running the extra mile in April.

The 44-year-old, who first signed for the club as a player back in 1993 and took charge of team affairs in 1999, is raising money for a Bromley based charity as he attempts to run the London Marathon on Sunday 22 April.

“My preparation’s going well, mate,” said the Cray Wanderers stalwart, who lives in Sidcup and is a bricklayer in his life away from football.

“It’s something I’ve wanted to do for some time.

“I will be running for Harris HospisCare and if you would like to sponsor me and help raise money for this worthwhile charity, you can do so online at www.virginmoneygiving.com/IanJenkoJenkins.

“You can also sponsor me by filling sponsorship forms in at the Conservative Club, Oxford Road, Sidcup or at any Cray Wanderers fixture or ring me with your details and I could chase you up for the money after the event if I’ve got any energy left!  Any amount would help.”

Chairman Gary Hillman, described Jenkins as a “top man”, when he revealed yesterday that  he (Hillman) is trying to find £6 million pounds to build the club’s new stadium at Sandy Lane in St Mary’s Cray in September 2014.

The Wands have played at Bromley’s Hayes Lane ground since vacating Oxford Road, Sidcup in 1999.

Mr Hillman said of Jenkins: “He’s a top man, the whole management team (Jenkins, Joe Francis and Paul Blade).  I personally think they’re the best set up in non-league football.  I wouldn’t swap them for anyone. Their heart and soul is in the club.

“It’s an enjoyment working with them every week and the superb football that we play, they’re absolutely amazing really.”

Seventh-placed Cray Wanderers, meanwhile, welcome Tooting & Mitcham United to Hayes Lane on Tuesday night and it would be a great opportunity for all supporters to donate money towards Jenkins’ 26-mile run.
