Tunbridge Wells begin transitional year with ex-Redhill boss Mike Maher in charge

TUNBRIDGE WELLS have unveiled a surprise managerial appointment by naming former Redhill manager boss Mike Maher.

The Southern Counties East Football League club lost the services of highly-successful Martin Larkin through a change in his work circumstances on 21 June and invited applications to become his successor.

Maher was formerly manager at Redhill where he successfully guided the Surrey based club to promotion into the Ryman League Division One South from the Sussex County League.

But Maher was sacked as Lobsters boss at the end of last season after guiding them to their second consecutive bottom three finish in the division.

He spent six years at the club, initially managing the under 18 team before progressing to manage the first team at Kiln Brow.

Maher holds an UEFA A coaching licence and also holds a qualification in psychology for football.

Clive Maynard, the chairman of Tunbridge Wells, said in a statement, posted on www.tunbridgewellsfc.com: “Mike understands the clubs desire to be playing Ryman football, however, both parties understand that this year will be a transitional year.

“Mike is impressed with the set-up of the club and its ambitions both on and off the pitch.

“Please join me in welcoming Mike to the Culverden and wishing him and his management team every success for the future.”

Maher’s first game in charge of the club will be their opening pre-season friendly away to Kent Invicta League side Crockenhill on 11 July.
