I want a clean sheet for one, I want us to defend at Whyteleafe, says VCD Athletic boss Keith McMahon

VCD ATHLETIC boss Keith McMahon has challenged his side to maintain a clean sheet at Whyteleafe on Tuesday night.

The Crayford based outfit got their Bostik South debut off to the worst possible start after they were crushed 5-0 at home to Faversham Town at Oakwood yesterday.

McMahon handed eight players their debuts with only right-back Jeffrey Imudia and midfielders, Siao Blackwood and Rashid Kamara making 49 appearances for the club between them.

They found themselves 2-0 down inside the opening six minutes when Charley Robertson and Liam King scored to give Faversham Town a dream start.

The Lilywhites rattled in three second half goals from striker King, substitute striker Jordan Casey and Sam Bewick tucked home a rebound after former Hythe Town keeper Joe Mant parried his injury time penalty.

McMahon described his side’s defending as “Sunday morning,” and “schoolboy”, and he demands a response at Church Road.

The Leafe came away from Greenwich Borough with a point in a 1-1 draw yesterday and host a Vickers side that have slumped inside the sole relegation berth after 90 minutes of football.

“I want a clean sheet for one, I want us to defend,” said McMahon.

“We need to help out the forwards and the midfield worked hard but we just got to cut out silly individual mistakes.  Hopefully that’s just like a one-off and we have to pick ourselves up and go again.

“I can’t get the defending out of my head! It’s going to be a difficult game. They’ve done well pre-season. If we play well I’m not worried about any other side but you can’t do what we’ve just gone and done at one end there.

“You can see we’ve got some good players that’s obvious,” added McMahon, who on their opening day game he has good individual technical players, but lack leadership in key areas.

The Vickers then make a trip to league rivals East Grinstead Town in The FA Cup Preliminary Round next Saturday, 19 August.

“Again, we need to get a result there. We need to start our season from Tuesday and Saturday and put this one behind us and just crack on, that’s all we can do,” added McMahon.

“It’s more important to get a result in the league first. It’s nice to be in The FA Cup, it’s good for the club but I’m not even thinking about that game, if I’m honest with you.”
