VCD Athletic boss Keith McMahon: People need to be patient

VCD ATHLETIC manager Keith McMahon says last night’s win in The FA Cup will now kick-start his side’s league campaign.

 

The Vickers needed a replay to knock Southern Counties East Football League side Croydon out of the FA Cup - after losing their first two games of the Ryman League Division One North campaign.

They led 2-0 inside the opening 20 minutes, courtesy of Jamie Guy’s first goal for the club and a fine strike from his strike partner Tyrus Gordon-Young.

McMahon revealed during the post-match press conference that he will be submitting a seven-day approach for Croydon goalscorer Jeff Dual-Kessie after impressing the Vickers boss over the two games.  The 23-year-old striker is not under contract at Croydon, although Dickson Gill said last night that he is going to keep him at The Arena.

VCD Athletic sealed their first goals and victory over Croydon last night and travel to Ware on Saturday, before hosting neighbours Phoenix Sports on Monday, both games kicking off at 15:00.

McMahon said: “The Ware game is going to be difficult.  It’s not the best of pitches. We go there now and we show the same commitment and the same work-rate as we did in the first half last night we’ll be fine.  We just need to get a goal.”

McMahon is a regular visitor to Phoenix Sports, enjoying the social side at the Barnehurst based club – but friendship will go out of the window when the two sides meet around the corner at Oakwood for the first league game between the clubs.

“Then it’s the big one against Phoenix. It’s massive for the two clubs. We’re all friends, not at the game we’re not and we just need to get points.

“I’m not going to be fussed if it’s against them but we have to show our quality and play the way we can then we’re not going to have any problems over the coming months.”

McMahon suffered his second relegation from the Ryman Premier League last season when Vickers finished at the foot of the table – and he suffered relegation when Thamesmead Town went down after just one season in 2014.

“People say you haven’t started well, we’re 10 days at the start of the season,” said McMahon.

“I watch games nearly every day of the week, especially last week. You need to do your homework.

“People need to be a bit patient. We’ve got some new lads, quite a few new lads and they need to bed down and get used to this level of football. It isn’t as easy as some think. It’s very quick, bo***ck and bite and they need to make sure that they’re up for it, which they are. It’s just a bit of confidence, that’s all it is and hopefully we’ve got that.”
