I'm looking forward to going back to Sittingbourne for the first time and will always be thankful to them for giving me my first opportunity in management, says VCD Athletic boss Nick Davis
VCD ATHLETIC manager Nick Davis says he is looking forward to making an emotional return to Sittingbourne tomorrow.
The Crayford-based club are sitting in fourth-place in the Isthmian League South East Division table, having collected 21 points from 12 games and are eight points adrift of leaders Cray Valley (Paper Mills).
The Vickers thrashed East Grinstead Town 4-1 at Oakwood last weekend, a game that turned out to be Tony Reid’s last game in charge of the Wasps, having lost his job today.
“We made hard work of our last game against East Grinstead. We took the lead and then we had a number of opportunities to extend our advantage and made it more comfortable for ourselves,” said Davis.
“We didn’t, they scored and they were back in the game but fair play to us, we were then devastating in a 15 minute spell and scored three and ended up winning the game comfortably.”
Davis makes the return to his old club Sittingbourne tomorrow.
Darren Blackburn’s side are in eighth-place in the pecking order, having picked up 16 points but do have a couple of games in hand on Davis’ men.
“I’m looking forward to going back to Sittingbourne for the first time as an opposite manager and seeing some familiar faces,” said Davis, who had a spell in charge of Ramsgate before taking over the VCD Athletic hot-seat.
“I enjoyed my time there and will always be thankful to them for giving me my first opportunity in management.
“It’s going to be a tough game. Darren has done a good job and they have some really good players so we will have to be at our best to get anything from it.
“I keep saying to the players we are so close to being a very good side but you have to remember we are a new side, only 20 league games from last season and the current one.
“We are averaging just under two points a game during that time with a plus 21 goal-difference. If we keep up that form then we won’t be far away from our goal we started out with.
“I want us to keep involved in the top eight as long as possible and see where that takes us.”
