Tommy Warrilow always has big, strong sides so it's going to be difficult, says VCD Athletic boss Keith McMahon

VCD ATHLETIC manager Keith McMahon says he will be feeling emotional when he takes his side to Princes Park to play his former club Thamesmead Town on Wednesday night.

Vickers lost their second league game of the season yesterday when they lost 3-1 at home to bottom-of-the-table side Sevenoaks Town and are fourth in the Bostik South East Division table, having picked up four wins out of six games.

Tommy Warrilow’s Thamesmead Town side, meanwhile, are third-from-bottom in the table, having won once in their opening five games.

“It’s going to be emotional because there’s not going to be no Peter Tierney. It will be the first time I’ve ever gone to the ground without him being there, which will be difficult not looking round and seeing him and not being greeted by him so that will be hard, apart from that, it won’t be.

“Tommy and I are good mates but it’s at Dartford so for me it doesn’t count.  Thamesmead, for me, sort of lost the emotion when they left Thamesmead.

“I’ve got a lot of feeling for some of the people that are left there and I still talk to them, I still go out with them.

“I understand why they’ve done it (left Bayliss Avenue), I was there. I know (chairman) Paul Bowden-Brown’s done a great job keeping them afloat so I’m not knocking him or anything like that but it’s another game for us, it’s going to be difficult but we’ll try to get three points to keep where we are.

“Tommy always has big strong sides and it’s going to be difficult.”

McMahon is relishing a midweek game – something that will be rare in the Bostik League this season with his division reduced from 24 teams to 20.

“You do miss midweek games, I think for the club’s and supporters through the whole league it’s bad because everyone likes a midweek game,” said McMahon.

“Everyone wants to play under lights, everyone wants to have a midweek game but I think they’re looking at rejigging the League Cup next year and we’ll have a look.

“I suppose it’s good when you’re in the play-offs and you’re doing well but I know there are coaches who will disagree with me but there is only so much you can fit into your training and there’s no better training than playing a match.  Me personally, I prefer the games but I’m not complaining.”
