VCD Athletic boss Nick Davis: We are a new team though, we haven’t been together long, so we need to see each other in different scenarios

VCD ATHLETIC manager Nick Davis says he wants to see how his players’ cope in different scenarios.

The Vickers suffered their third successive defeat after losing 1-0 away to Faversham Town on Tuesday night, slipping down a couple of places to fourth in the Isthmian League South East Division table with 12 points from six games.

James Collins’ men, however, have closed the gap and are a place lower with the same number of points from the same number of games after former Vicker Kelvin Ogboe scored the only goal of the game in the 40^th minute at Salters Lane.

“We are a new team though, we haven’t been together long, so we need to see each other in different scenarios,” said Davis.

“I need to see what they’re like when we’re chasing the game, when we’re losing, on different pitches. We can’t always play on VCD’s pitch and the pitches are going to get worse, a lot worse.  The pitch at Faversham was ok.  We need to build a squad that can deal with all scenarios, all types of pitches, formations and personnel.”

Lloyd Blackman brings his side to Oakwood tomorrow with his Whitstable Town side sitting in seventh-place in the table with 11 points from eight games.

They held Cray Valley (Paper Mills) to a 1-1 draw at The Belmont on Tuesday night, three days after Kevin Watson’s side reached The FA Cup First Round for the very first time after beating National League side Maidenhead United 3-2 last weekend.

The two sides met on the Kent coast on Saturday 26 September – league match day two – with VCD Athletic claiming a 4-1 win.

“We’ve played them quite recently haven’t we, so it’s not always great when you play a team quite close,” said Davis.

“They’ve picked up some really good results and drew against Cray Valley and they drew 2-2 at East Grinstead Town last weekend.

“Lloyd will have them really well set-up, so it’s a tough game but at home, on our pitch, it will be a different scenario for us.

“We’ve got six points away from home already so it’s not doom and gloom but obviously I’m disappointed, of course, because I expected more from us at Faversham because we certainly weren’t at our best.”
