Vickers boss Foley adds another Stone to his ranks

Friday 18th September 2009
VCD ATHLETIC have today unveiled the signing of former Ramsgate striker Aaron Firth, following a very brief spell with Ryman Premier League side Maidstone United, writes Jeff Perkins.

Firth has made the switch to Ryman League Division One North side VCD Athletic, to follow in the footsteps of other former Stones’ players now plying their trade at Oakwood under former Stones captain and Vickers manager Paul Foley.

Firth joins up with ex-Stones Leroy Huggins, Jason Barton, Nick Hegley and Stephen Hogg at the double winning Crayford club that has also seen Richard Sinden and Simon Austin in Vickers colours .

Firth is known to VCD fans having played against them in their Kent League days for Herne Bay before moving on to Ramsgate and then Maidstone to play in the Ryman Premier for both sides.

The pacy, skilful forward joins last week's signing Jason Barton in a strengthened squad that started the season well but has dropped down the table slightly in recent weeks.

Speaking to the club website, www.vcd-athletic.co.uk
, Foley, 37,  said: “We needed to bring in a forward this week as we have suffered with recent injuries to Leroy Huggins and Alfie Harris but even without these injuries we were still looking to add to the forward line options since losing a goalscorer like Richard Sinden.

“Aaron is someone who can score goals and create them with his pace and skill and I am sure he will be a good acquisition for the club.

“He is available for the game at home to Maldon on Saturday and I am sure he will feature at some stage.”

Foley added, “I am hoping to land another signature in the next couple of weeks who will be a major signing for a club like ours if it happens but we will have to wait and see.

“Rest assured though, if we believe we need to strengthen the side we will go and get the right players in as we have never struggled to attract quality players here despite the limitations we have.

“I said right from the start of this season that the second half of the campaign will be when we can really judge how the side has adapted to the new league.

“Last year we signed 5 players after Christmas and gathered momentum with a stronger squad to win the title.

“There will be different targets this year but we will definitely end up with a stronger squad than we started with. That process has already started with the signatures of Barts (Barton) and Aaron and with Kane Rice on the way back to fitness it will be like another new signing.”
