Vickers pitch will suit us, says title chasing Hythe boss Scott Porter
Monday 02nd August 2010
HYTHE TOWN boss Scott Porter says he is looking forward to opening his side’s Kent League campaign at VCD Athletic on Saturday afternoon, writes Stephen McCartney.
Ahead of the Oakwood clash, Porter has publicly stated that his club are going for promotion this season, as he feels Hythe are equipped to play Ryman League Division One South football in 12 months time.
“Obviously that’s where we want to be - we want to be in the Ryman,” Porter told www.kentishfootball.co.uk last week.
“We’re not going to deny the fact we need to be in that level, with the facilities and the players and the way the club is run - we want to be in the Ryman.
“We’ve come third (last season) and we want to go another one further than second.
“We want to win the League and we want to get out of this League!”
After making those comments, Hythe lost their first pre-season game, to Ryman League Division One South side Chatham Town, a little reminder, maybe.
VCD Athletic are now managed by Ricky Bennett, following Paul Foley’s defection to Chatham, where he took 95% of the playing squad, leaving Bennett and his assistant manager Andy Silk, who decided not to join Foley due to work commitments to rebuild the squad.
“We’ve got Tuesday and we’ve got a session on Thursday and we’ll work a lot on Thursday to prepare for the game,” said Porter.
“We’re there or there abouts and it’s good. It’s been the best pre-season I’ve had as a player, assistant and now as a manager.
“Everyone’s really looking forward to starting the season and that goes everyone involved at the football club.”
VCD Athletic were demoted following one year in Ryman League Division One North, where Foley lead the side to eight-place.
But the Crayford based club were harshly relegated due to ground grading issues, but Hythe will visit a smart looking ground, although the pitch has been shortened at one end of the ground.
“It’s a nice place to go, the pitch is nice and it will suit us,” added Porter.
“We don’t know what we’re going to face when we turn up so it will be interesting. We’ll prepare the best we can and as normal and wait to kick-off and see what happens.
“At the minute we can’t wait and we want to get it going. I suppose it’s the same as everyone. We’re looking forward to it.”
