Warrilow plays the waiting game in transfer market
TONBRIDGE ANGELS boss Tommy Warrilow hopes to add up to two players to his threadbare squad - in time for their trip to Boreham Wood on Saturday, writes Stephen McCartney.
The Angels were down to bare bones for last night’s home game against fellow play-off challengers Carshalton Athletic.
But Warrilow played a master-stroke as his decision to play big central defender Leon Legge up front paid off.
Legge scored the only goal of the game after 31 minutes, sliding in a centre from his strike partner Jamie Cade.
It ended Carshalton’s fifteen match unbeaten run on their travels and although the impressive win keeps the Angels in third place (ten points behind second placed Staines Town), they are four points ahead of the Surrey side.
When asked what pleased him about last night’s game, Warrilow, speaking to www.kentishfootball.co.uk tonight replied, “Basically we were down to the bare bones and the togetherness on and off the pitch last night, the crowd, the players, anyone at the game could see there were eleven boys out there, 12, that gave me 150%.
“It was a good night for the club, everyone was together. It was really good, what I call a really good old fashion night at Longmead.”
Simon Glover, who suffered breathing difficulties at Saturday’s controversial defeat to Sutton United, came off the bench to replace Phil Starkey, who suffered a knee injury last night.
“It’s obviously nice to have the options,” said Warrilow. “I’m always confident with the eleven that I had out there was good enough to get a result.
“The main thing was to bounce back after Saturday, against a team that haven’t lost away from home all season.
“Anyone who was there could see we never gave them any time; we worked our socks off and could have had a few more to be honest.
“But I’m not going to start moaning as the most important thing was the three points.”
Warrilow, meanwhile, praised Legge, who showed his versatility by frightening the Carshalton defence all night.
“I started with Leon Legge up front, he done well, done very well. He worked his socks off up there and scored and you can’t ask no more than that,” he said.
“He was unlucky, he could have had a hat-trick, Leon and Jamie Cade up there were a real menace all night and they didn’t give them five minutes to breathe.”
When asked if the big defender will play as a make-shift striker on Saturday, Warrilow replied, “It’s an option that I knew we’d have with having no height up there. It all depends who we play against as Carshalton don’t have an aerial threat from open play but obviously each week that will change.”
Warrilow was keeping his transfer targets close to his chest, but he could unveil a new signing, on loan or permanent, tomorrow.
“I definitely find out tomorrow about one and then Friday we may be looking at another one,” he said.
“There’s no real developments on it, it’s all hearsay. I’m trying to get some answers, but it’s a bit delicate at the moment. No-one’s saying yes or no, it’s always a maybe. No-one’s given me a definite answer, I’m waiting to hear.”
But he did reveal some good news concerning Tommy Tyne (thigh) and Ade Olorunda (foot).
“Hopefully I should have Tommy Tyne available for selection and possibly Ade Olorunda, but we’ll know more after training on Thursday,” revealed Warrilow. “I’m definitely hoping Tommy will be available and Ade we will have to monitor.”
With Staines Town welcoming Carshalton Athletic on Saturday, Warrilow has challenged his side to pick up three points at Boreham Wood at the weekend.
“The thing is, relevant of losing against Sutton United, it was important to win against Carshalton, but had we lost, there’s 36 points to play for,” said the boss.
“Even though I was delighted with the result and everyone was fully pumped up after the game, I soon calmed everyone down.
“But Saturday is important that we go to Boreham Wood and not undo what we done last night.
“We have to stay fully focused. If we put in the work ethic like we did last night, there’s no reason why we can’t go all the way and make our play-off targets.”
Speaking about Boreham Wood, Warrilow said, “They’re a team that like to play football, it’s a nice surface which would suit us but I’m not expecting an easy game.
“They’re a team that have had their ups and downs like everyone else. They’re organised but we’ll show them 100% respect but the main thing is not to drop our standards on the work ethic and get the ball down, knock it about and earn the right to play and hopefully take our chances.
“Staines have got Carshalton, a big game on Saturday, one of them have to drop (points) so it’s important we keep our foot on the pedal and try and capitalise and make that gap (between us and Carshalton) a little bit bigger.”
Lee Minshull, a recent capture from Ramsgate, serves the last of his three-match ban at Meadow Park, but Carl Rook is still two weeks away from returning to action, due to a combination of a knee injury and suspension.
