Warrilow: Strikers must start doing some damage
Wednesday 19th August 2009
TONBRIDGE ANGELS boss Tommy Warrilow has told his strikers to get their scoring boots on at Waltham Abbey on Saturday, writes Stephen McCartney.
Tonbridge romped into a 3-0 lead after just 25 minutes at newly promoted neighbours Cray Wanderers last night - but Warrilow wasn’t a happy man afterwards.
“I’m really annoyed that we haven’t sent a message out tonight,” he told www.kentishfootball.co.uk, following his side’s 3-1 romp at Hayes Lane.
“We could’ve done some damage tonight, we haven’t and that’s what I’m not happy about. We should’ve scored more goals tonight!
The Angels, who lost their opening game 2-1 to bogey side AFC Hornchurch at Longmead Stadium, took only 48 seconds to take the lead, through Tommy Osborne’s own goal.
And two goals from striker Paul Booth gave the Angels a 3-0 lead after just 25 minutes, but they failed to take any more chances.
To their credit, Cray Wanderers performed much better during the second half, pulling a goal back on the hour through former Tonbridge striker Michael Power.
Warrilow expects a big season from his front-pairing of Carl Rook and Booth.
“All the strikers in our team,” he said, “If they don’t get 25-30 goals this season then there’s something wrong with them.
“We are going to create chances, as you’ve seen tonight, but I expect Paul Booth to get goals like that.
“I’m pleased with Boothy, he’s off and running. Rookie has got to get off and running now, but there’ve got to come thick and fast.
“It’s up to the boys to get in the areas and start converting.”
Warrilow takes his side to Waltham Abbey on Saturday, a side that were defeated 2-1 at home to Maidstone United last night, courtesy of goals from James Pinnock and Tony Gonnella.
“I think every game this year will be really tough games,” warned Warrilow.
“They’ll be no easy ones, but if we keep on what we’re doing, hopefully we can start converting the chances and make it more easy for ourselves.”
