Watson takes a pay cut to sign for in-form Vickers

Monday 07th December 2009
VCD ATHLETIC boss Paul Foley has secured the signature of former Folkestone Invicta defender Kevin Watson, 28, from rival Ryman League Division One North side Concord Rangers, writes Jeff Perkins.

Vickers fans will need no introduction to Watson, who scored the solitary goal for Rangers on 17th October in the narrow defeat at Oakwood in the FA Trophy.

Watson is a former Charlton Athletic schoolboy player who has been capped for the England Students and British University teams.

With a vast amount of non-league experience behind him gained at Carshalton Athletic, Welling United, Team Bath and Maidstone United the defender made his debut in the 2-1 win over Wingate & Finchley, their 6th win from the last 7 league games which takes the Crayford-based club up to seventh in the Ryman North.

Foley, speaking to www.vcd-athletic.co.uk, said Watson’s arrival at Oakwood will strengthen his squad.

He said: “We had already assembled a very strong squad of players before but with the addition of Kevin that squad has been improved and strengthened further still.

“We are always looking to improve as the season goes on, we did exactly that for the previous two seasons, and we have done the same this year with Jason Barton, Aaron Firth, Meshach Nugent, Aaron Hamilton and now Kevin all joining later in the season.

“All five of these players have played at a higher level yet all of these players want to come down to Oakwood and play for us, taking big pay cuts along the way which says it all really.

“Anthony Hogg has been superb playing at centre half since the Potters Bar win but he will be out for a while with a broken nose sustained at Lowestoft courtesy of a stray elbow that needs to be re-set.

“Therefore we needed to get a similarly experienced player on board and we had been looking at Kevin for a while having seen him play against us three times already.

“He knows a few of the lads already and he stepped straight in yesterday with no fuss and played as if he had been with us all season making a fine debut.”

In-form Vickers are now only eight points adrift of league leaders Lowestoft Town, the best supported club in the division.

This Saturday, Foley’s side travel to thirteenth placed side Ilford.
