Watts' fitness race to help out his beloved Fisher
FISHER ATHLETIC legend Steve Watts believes he can still do a job this season for Dave Mehmet’s relegation threatened side.
“'I've been out for eight month's with injury but I've been given the all clear now by the doctor so it's just a case of building my fitness up,” the striker told www.fisherathletic.co.uk.
“I'm two weeks away from playing competitive football. I'm off to Tenerife shortly to run up a few mountains and then I'll come back in late March hopefully raring to go.”
Watts, who scored nearly 150 goals for the club in two separate spells, praised the unpaid players for their commitment shown for the struggling south London club.
He added, “The players here have done well, they're all good quality footballers but I see they've struggled in front of goal.
“Maybe I can lend a bit of my experience and know how and help out my club in these tough times.”
In other Fisher news, the official supporters teams of Fisher Athletic, Dulwich Hamlet, Millwall and Eastbourne Borough will challenge for the Southwark News Cup at Champion Hill Stadium on Sunday 3rd May.
The new four team tournament, sponsored by local paper The Southwark News, is a joint venture hosted by both Fisher Athletic and Dulwich Hamlet.
May 3rd will also be the first annual 'Family Day' at Champion Hill with a Barbecue, Ice Cream Van and Bouncy Castle on offer for younger visitor's as well as over three hours of competitive football.
The Club House bar will also be open for the entire day offering fine views of the playing action!
To add extra spice, Donna Powell, who managed Fisher Athletic’s first team against Eastleigh last month and was the subject of national debate will take charge of the Fisher supporters team aiming to win the trophy.
Powell, speaking to www.fisherathletic.co.uk, says she is looking forward to the occasion.
“It should be a really good day for everyone after a long hard season and hopefully the sun will be out as well,” she said.
“I'm always keen to manage any team representing Fisher and I'll do what I can to make sure my team give it a good go and hopefully win the tournament for the Fish!!'
Fisher Chairman Martin Eede added, “It's a bit of fun after a particularly tough campaign and I'm sure the players and supporters from all four teams will look forward to the day and enjoy the occasion.
“It's the least we could do for our fans and maybe Dave (Mehmet) and the players will also come down and switch roles cheering on the supporters for a change.
“Hopefully if we can encourage local family's to spend the afternoon with us and help produce a really good atmosphere, well that would be even better!'
The tournament will consist of a six match group phase before the Final between the sides who finish first and second.
