We are miles off Concords' budget, reveals Foley

Thursday 15th October 2009
VCD ATHLETIC boss Paul Foley says his club cannot compete in the financial stakes with Saturday’s FA Carlsberg Trophy opponents Concord Rangers, writes Jeff Perkins.

The Canvey Island based outfit make the trip over the Bridge to Oakwood in the first qualifying round with a big budget at their disposal – and Foley is looking forward to the third meeting between the two sides this season.

“We have played them twice already and there has been very little difference between the two sides,” Foley told
www.vcd-athletic.co.uk.

“We should have won our first game back in August but they were very fortunate with deflections on both goals and their equaliser was in the last 2 minutes of the game.

“Last week at their place we definitely deserved at least a draw, missed a penalty with 5 minutes to go and really we had the better chances over the 90 minutes.

“Their manager was very complimentary after the game about us but I am not interested in anyone's compliments, I am interested in getting results!'

In Lyle Taylor, Concord have the league's top marksmen, so how did the 38 year old manager see the Vickers keeping this highly rated forward quiet

Foley said: “He is a dangerous player definitely as he has good feet and good pace. The lad up front with him Danny Heale is just as good and as a pair they are probably the best front two we have faced so far but we have dealt with their threat well over the two games really and we have a few dangerous players of our own for them to worry about.

“In Nick Hegley, Meshach Nugent, Danny Penny, Leroy Huggins, Lee Maskell, Aaron Firth and James Duckworth we have players who can make things happen too and they will know that they are in for a tough game after last week's close encounter!

“We also know plenty about their players and where we think we can cause them problems.”

When asked if the £2,300 prize money would be handy for a club like VCD, Foley replied, “The money would be a great bonus for us as we run a very tight ship here, ask any of the lads, they don't believe me when I tell them what we can afford to pay them!

“Despite those limitations we have managed to bring some real talent down to the club as they are all sold on what we are trying to do on the pitch.

“We are miles off the likes of Concords' budget when I know for a fact they are paying their full back double what our top earner gets! I dread to think what their front two are getting or what the total budget is but good luck to them, they are obviously well backed compared to us.

“If we do get the prize money it will get ploughed back into the club in some way which is essential for the essentials.

“If I'm lucky I may get a packet of crisps at the bar out of the winnings but the bar snacks are good at VCD!'

Just 96 people watched the Vickers’ defeat East Thurrock United 4-2 in midweek and the Old Road based club are doing what they can to entice supporters for Saturday’s FA Trophy tie.

The club have invited all junior side players to attend the match free of charge with all football club members and players’ parents allowed in at a reduced entrance fee of £5.
