We are very disappointed that things didn't work out for Peter Nott, says Whitstable vice-chairman
Sunday 16th October 2011
PETER NOTT has explained why he has stepped down as manager of struggling Whitstable Town this morning, writes Stephen McCartney.Whitstable crashed to a 3-0 defeat at basement side Crawley Down yesterday, a result that leaves the Kent club in 18th place in the Ryman League Division One South table, with three wins and eight defeats from their opening eleven games. The Oystermen are only three points clear of the relegation zone.
Whitstable also suffered defeats in both the FA Cup and FA Trophy at the first hurdle, losing to Worthing and Thamesmead Town respectively.
Nott issued the following statement on the club’s website www.whitstabletownfc.co.uk.
He said: “Last night I contacted Joe Brownett and Gary Johnson to request a meeting at the ground on Sunday morning.
“I asked for the meeting as I wanted to inform them personally of my reasons for handing in my resignation as I have the utmost respect for them both and appreciate the support they have always given to me.
“Anybody that knows me will tell you that I always give 100% to any task that I take on and to be perfectly honest the bad run of results have really got to me lately and the job has stopped being enjoyable, and once that happens I think it is time for both parties to move on.
“Hopefully it will be recognised that our good run of form in the second half of last season helped us maintain our Ryman League status and I sincerely hope the boys stick together and get some wins under their belts to start climbing up the table again.
“On a personal note I would like to thank you all for making me feel very welcome at your great club and special thanks go to all the committee members especially Joe & Josie, Gary, Tony Rouse, Andy Short, Phil & Lorraine Gurr, Pete Blackmore and Bruce & Connie Smith, you all work exceptionally hard for the club and deserve to be successful.
“Finally please continue to support the club in every way you can as this will help to generate the funds that the club need to be successful in a very competitive league. Come on you Oysters!”
Nott had high hopes at the start of this season after the great escape last when he and Steve Nolan kept the club in the Ryman League.
A club statement added: “After a fantastic start to this season, two wins from their first two matches the duo had high hopes for the future.
“Despite giving 110% they have been unable to match the early success losing eight of the first eleven league games as well as suffering early exits from both the FA Cup and the FA Trophy.”
Chairman Joe Brownett paid tribute to the professionalism Nott has shown during his time at Whitstable Town.
He said: “Always a difficult time when a manager that you get on well with is on such a poor run of form, we have stuck by Peter and although we accepted that he felt he was unable to carry on as manager of the club all involved are bitterly disappointed that he was not able to turn things around.
“But Peter is a realist; he knows that football is a results business and the buck stops with the manager. Peter goes with our best wishes for the future; he will always be welcome at the Belmont.”
Vice Chairman Gary Johnson added: “Peter is the consummate professional, and has been since the first day he joined the club. Like Joe, and I am sure I speak for everyone involved with Whitstable Town Football Club we are so very disappointed that things did not work out for Peter.
“It needs to go on record the tremendous amount of work he did, quietly behind the scenes away from his work on the pitch. No one could have worked harder to turn things round, but in the end it’s Peter decision to step down. We all wish Peter all very the best in the future.”
