We can last the distance, says marathan man Ian Jenkins

Monday 16th April 2012
CRAY WANDERERS manager Ian Jenkins says he is on the verge of breaking his own personal target as he raises funds for charity as he prepares to run the London Marathon next Sunday.

The Sidcup based 44-year-old will be pounding the streets of the capital to raise over £2,000 for Harris HospisCare, Bromley.

When asked how his preparation is going, Jenkins said: “All my runs are done.  I’ve done a few twenty milers. I’ve done 40 miles a week, so I’m well up for it!   I can’t wait!  I just hope it’s not too hot for me.  It ain’t going to be easy!

“If people want to sponsor me this week, click on the website below.  I’m hoping people can get me some money.”

Jenkins added: “A lot of people have said I’m mad, but they think I’m mad anyway!  I’m not mad to run it now.  If you run it you’re doing it for good causes.  All those people who do run it how much money is raised through it?  It’s fantastic!

“I won’t put it down to bring mad.  It’s a nice charity.”

Wife, Wendy was going around Hayes Lane during Cray Wanderers’ 1-0 home defeat to play-off chasing rivals Lewes at the weekend and Jenkins says his players will each donate £50 to the cause.

Jenkins said: “I’m over my target.  I’ve got £1,700, that was my target.  I’m over that now.  Wendy went around the ground on Saturday and got a few sponsors’ and I’ve got a few online so hopefully if I can get to £2,000, it will be great!

“The boys haven’t sponsored me yet.  They’ll all put in £50 each, so I’m well over my target.”

Jenkins takes his side to Suffolk to face fourth-placed Bury Town next Saturday and he wants his side to get back on track in the play-off race following their defeat to Lewes.

The Wands slipped to eighth place in the table and they must win their last three games, at Bury Town, at home to Lowestoft Town (24 April) and at home to basement side Horsham on 28 April and hope results elsewhere go their way to grab a play-off place that their attacking flair deserves.

When asked whether his side can last the distance, Jenkins replied, “I think we can! A lot of young boys’ in that dressing room probably haven’t been in that situation before. It’s hard for them to get themselves up every, every game.  The older ones take care of themselves, but I think we can.  I really do.

“We’ve got a good enough side and I think it will turn round this little blip we’re having.”

The standard of the Hayes Lane pitch has come under criticism in recent weeks and the fact that Bromley (4 wins at home, six away) and Cray Wanderers (8 wins at home, 11 away) don’t seem to win on it. Accordingly to a Bromley source,  Saturday’s game against Lewes was the 133rd game on the pitch this season

Jenkins said: “They’ve (Bromley) have done a bit of work on it.  I can understand them doing a bit of work on it, but it hasn’t helped our game, put it that way.

“Both teams have got to play on it, but it’s not inducive to the way we want to play football.  I’m not making any excuses to be honest with you.  It’s not too good, with the way we want to play.”

Looking ahead to the long trip to Bury Town, Jenkins said: “We have a fantastic away record, so we’ll go to Bury Town next week.  We always have a coach and a bit of breakfast in the morning and all go on the coach and next day I have to run 26 and a half miles, which is something I’m really looking forward to.  The Bury trip away and then three hours on the coach and 26 miles the next day.”
