We can't keep throwing points away, says Tonbridge Angels boss Tommy Warrilow

TONBRIDGE ANGELS boss Tommy Warrilow says his players have to grow up and adapt to life in Conference South, writes Stephen McCartney. It appears that the Angels have difficulty playing under floodlights, as they suffered a crushing 4-1 home defeat to fellow promoted side Sutton United and were defeated 3-2 at Welling United under lights.
But they opened their inaugural Blue Square Bet South campaign with a 4-0 win at Maidenhead United and have also defeated full-time outfit Eastleigh 4-0 at Longmead Stadium – both on a Saturday.
Two goals from striker Frannie Collin snatched a two-goal lead – against the run of play - at Welling United in midweek, before Loick Pires headed home a crucial life-line for Jamie Day’s side just before the break.
Andy Pugh capitalised on a slip from Ben Andrews to level, before former Tonbridge Angels’ youngster, Jack Parkinson, 22, glanced home a deserved 74th minute winner for the dominant Wings’.
“The season’s only four games old so I’m not going to go completely overboard after every loss because Saturday’s fine and Tuesday’s we’re down in the dumps,” said Warrilow.
“We’ve got Dover and Woking coming up so they’re not going to be, by any means, a stroll in the park, but like I’ve said from day one, we just have to learn from it.
“I said to the lads’, ‘you’ve got to start growing up a little bit’ and taking some responsibility.”
Warrilow will work on set-pieces at tonight’s training session, before travelling down to Dover Athletic on Saturday, before welcoming Woking to Longmead Stadium on Bank Holiday Monday (both games kicking off at 3pm).
Dover Athletic were held to current leaders Dartford to a 2-2 draw at Crabble in midweek, with George Purcell and Billy Bricknell on target against the Darts.
Warrilow said: “I’ve got to sort Tuesday out on Thursday again. The good thing is we didn’t play well (at Welling). If we played really well and got nothing out of it, you’d be even more gutted.
“I’ve lost games in the past when you’re playing well and you know it will come right but Saturday (Eastleigh) was good and you think, ‘right, let’s build on it’ and we’ve gone back again (after defeat at Welling) and that’s the frustrating part of it.
“I’ve had a go at them, I’m not going to lie. Again, (after the Sutton game) I had another go at them. We’ve got to wake up. We can’t keep throwing points away and we can’t keep conceding goals.
“We’ve scored two goals (at Welling), at this level that should be enough to win a game of football but it’s the manner of the goals, all set-pieces. We knew we’d be in trouble with and that’s what I’m more gutted with.”
Tonbridge Angels are playing at Conference South for the very first time in their history – and Warrilow doesn’t want to suffer relegation next April.
They have picked up six points out of the 12 available, but their next three games, against Dover Athletic, Woking and Farnborough are all tough.
He said: “I wouldn’t swap this for the world. We’ve worked hard enough to get here. I want to play Dover and Woking. I want to win every game still at this level.”
