We deserve to be where we are, says table-topping Seager

Sunday 14th January 2007
Whitstable Town boss Marc Seager admitted he was “over the moon” as his side went four points clear of the Kent League table yesterday, writes Stephen McCartney.

Goals from strikers Steve Marshall, who later went off with a groin injury, and Stuart King, defeated Thamesmead Town as the top-two sides locked horns at The Belmont.

“It was a big game today and we’ve come up with the goods,” a delighted Seager told www.kentishfootball.co.uk.

“I thought it was a very professional performance.  We knew Thamesmead were going to be a very good side.

“I thought we dominated the first half but I thought second half they had a lot of possession without really hurting us.

“We’ve moved on and got the three points so I’m over the moon”.

Their 2-0 win over the Mead leaves Whitstable unbeaten in sixteen league outings, winning 13 of them.

The last Kent League side to remain unbeaten during their league campaign was the Sittingbourne side during the 1990-91 campaign.

But Seager is playing down his side’s chances to emulate the Bourne.

“We’re not getting carried away,” he said.  “Yes, we’ve won but we’ve still got 16 league games left so I know it’s an old cliché, but it’s a cliché we do well with – we’ll take it one game at a time.

“If we’re four points clear with a game to go, obviously I’ll be over the moon.”

Speaking about remaining unbeaten for the rest of the season, Seager added: “I don’t know if we was to do that but it would be an absolutely unbelievable achievement.

“We’re not looking at anything like that, all we do is take one game at a time and we try to win every game that we play in.

“To have gone 16 games, won 13 and drawn 3, a big fat zero in the defeat column is very nice.

“But we’re not getting carried away and I’m doing my best that we don’t get any complacency in the side and hopefully we can move onto next week and get another three points.”

Seager takes his side to Lordswood, a side that claimed a point in the 1-1 draw at The Belmont in November.

“It’s going to be very tough down there,” he predicted.  “Lordswood came down here and gave us a great game and although we did have ten men, we did drop a couple of points that day.

“It’s going to be tough for us but when you think you’re major league contenders, you’ve got to go to places like that and get the points and that’s what we’ll be looking to do.”

Marshall, who scored his eleventh goal of the season to give Whitstable the lead on the stroke of half-time against Thamesmead Town yesterday, is a major concern.

But patient, much-sought after striker, Andy Constable is waiting in the wings to fill his boots.

Seager explained: “It seems to be quite a bad one with his groin.

“He thinks he’s done his groin quite badly and we’ll get that checked out and see what happens.

“If it’s as bad as it seems it’s going to be a massive blow for us because I think Steve has been one of our top players this year and today, 34, 35-year-old, I didn’t think they could handle him.

“He showed why he’s such a good player.  It will be a big blow but football’s like that and all off a sudden AC (Andy Constable) not been very happy he’s been on the bench, gives him an opportunity but that’s football for you.”

Seager added: “Questions were going to be asked of us again today.  I’ve heard many times over the last couple of weeks that we haven’t played anybody yet.

“I think that’s total rubbish that.  Because to say we haven’t played anyone, the only team we haven’t played at the moment is VCD.

“We’re still there with a nought in the defeat column so like I say, it’s a massive testament to the lads, a massive testament to the club and if I’m honest we totally deserve to be sitting at the top of the table tonight.”
