We have players who can perform on the bigger stage, says Faversham boss Ray Turner

FAVERSHAM TOWN face a difficult trip to play Ryman Premier side Carshalton Athletic in the First Qualifying Round of the FA Cup on Saturday, but manager Ray Turner believes his side could cause an upset, writes Mike Green.

Speaking after Tuesday night’s 0-0 draw with Whyteleafe, Turner admitted afterwards that he was satisfied if not completely happy with his sides performance.

He said: "I would have taken a point beforehand. We have created opportunities tonight, and my biggest disappointment is that we haven’t kept a winning run going but we are now unbeaten in four - it would have been nice to have won four on the bounce going into Saturday's cup tie at Carshalton.

“I think the key on Tuesday was not to concede as they were a big powerful side going up front. We had the better chances of the few created over the 90 minutes and sometimes you have to settle for a point at home.   After all staying unbeaten breads confidence."

And confidence is something that Turner believes his side has, if only some of them would believe it themselves.

"I know that we can give Carshalton a really good game in the Cup because we have the players who can perform on the bigger stage.

“I just hope that they can take some of their recent form into what is an important game for the club.

“Aaron Quain scored a great free kick last weekend which he would have repeated again on Tuesday night but for a stunning save and then the Whyteleafe keeper produced an even better save to deny Dale Skelton after a great flowing move, and I think in the second half Ashley Brown's had a header just wide and then Damien Abel's had a couple of volleys late on - one very close from the edge of the box.

“So when you sit down and analyse it at the end if the game its always tricky, but when I look at it later on when I get home, we have created chances as well as keeping a clean sheet. Its another building block towards where we want to be."

Asked if his side could cause an upset, Turner simply replied, "If we get them back to Salters Lane on Tuesday night, I'll be a happy manager but if we win at the first time of asking...

“Tuesday's point was another building block towards where we want to get to - and an FA Cup run would help that no end as well as obviously helping the club's coffers.

“It’s a great competition to be involved in - here's hoping that our involvement goes beyond the weekend."
