We have to be mentally right for Horsham YMCA, says Justin Luchford

FAVERSHAM TOWN boss Justin Luchford says he wants his side to replicate the desire they showed that beat high-flying Whitehawk last weekend to inflict more misery on struggling Horsham YMCA tomorrow, writes Stephen McCartney.

Goals from Dane Luchford and snood wearing Damian Abel stunned the big-spenders during an impressive first half performance by The Lilywhites as they secured a 2-1 win over the Hawks at Salters Lane.

Faversham climbed up to eighth place in the Ryman League Division One South table with 32 points from 23 games and welcome basement side Horsham YMCA, who are now managed by former Ashford Town manager John Cumberbatch.

“Tough, because they’ve got a new manager, John Cumberbatch has gone in there,” said Luchford.

“If you notice their results, they’re no longer getting any free scoring beatings.  They will tighten things up to be honest.

“They’re the worst games in the world because mentally you have to get right for and you don’t want to play the bottom sides.

“If we need to learn from anything, Whitstable at home, first game of the year, they were sitting in the bottom three or four and we got a point and had to work hard for it.

“We’ll do nothing different (to the Whitehawk game), we’ll have to do a job.  We just have to keep going, we’ve lost one in 12 and last Saturday was a big, big win but nothing we haven’t deserved.”

The Faversham manager hopes his younger brother Dane gets on the score sheet again tomorrow.

When asked about their relationship, older brother Justin said: “To be honest I try to keep it as professional as I can at the football club.

“We’ve got a good relationship off the pitch as a family and we’re a very close family, mum and dad and stuff but come Saturday afternoon he’s one of the lads.  That’s the way he gets treated.  He doesn’t get any favours or anything like that, he earns the right to be in there and if he’s not doing it, he  knows before, he’s been subbed and he’s been left on the bench.  There’s nothing special for Dane.  It’s always nice to see him score.”
