We have to get our heads right for Corinthian, says Fisher boss Steve Firkins

FISHER boss Steve Firkins says he is expecting a tough game when he takes his side to unbeaten Corinthian on Saturday, writes Stephen McCartney.

Corinthian have won both of their opening two Kent Hurlimann Football League games against Greenwich Borough (3-1) and Sevenoaks Town (2-0) and secured a lucrative home tie against Maidstone United in the FA Cup Preliminary Round on 3rd September, after beating Dorking 4-3 last weekend.

Tony Sitford’s side are one of five teams with a 100% record in the league so far and are presently in second place in the table.

Fisher began their campaign with a 2-0 home defeat to Erith & Belvedere, but bounced back with a 6-2 win at Greenwich Borough.

They were held to a 2-2 draw at Chichester City in the Extra Preliminary Round of the FA Cup, but thumped the Sussex County League side 6-1 in last Monday’s replay at Champion Hill.

After their trip to Gay Dawn Farm on Saturday, Firkins takes his Fisher side to play arch-rivals Beckenham Town next Monday, at Eden Park Avenue (1pm).

“We’ve got two hard games,” said Firkins.  “We’ve got Corinthian, who we go away to and then Beckenham Town on the Monday.

“Corinthian, they’ve started off well, three (wins) out of three, so they’ll be chomping at the bit and we have to get our heads right for Corinthian’s.”

The Fisher boss was forced into making changes to his forward line, as Danny Hunt (groin) and Peter Afolayan (knee) were both injured, so Steve O’Donnell partnered Mark Sisson up front, with O’Donnell, 29, netting a hat-trick.

“The thing that really pleased me was our width on Monday night,” recalled Firkins.

“We’ve been going back to a more traditional 4-4-2 and not getting no real joy out of it but our wide players have set up most of our goals.

“We didn’t want to risk Danny, he text me on Monday morning and he said he felt sore, so we left him out all together.

“Peter, he worked hard Saturday, and he’s got a little bit of a knee problem.  I didn’t really want to risk him, but he was itching to get on.”

Firkins added: “Actually having a big squad now is paying dividends.”

Fisher travel to Lingfield in the FA Cup Preliminary Round on 3rd September, but Firkins wants to get their two league games out of the way first.

“We’ll look forward to playing against them,” said the former Greenwich Borough boss.

“But I’m more concerned about Saturday’s game now.”
