We have to make sure we're hard to beat, says Bromley boss Mark Goldberg

Thursday 22nd September 2011
WELLING UNITED player-manager Jamie Day says picking up three points against Bromley on Saturday is more valuable to him than the £5,000 prize money up for grabs in the FA Cup seven days later, writes Stephen McCartney.

The Wings travel to Hayes Lane for a Blue Square Bet South fixture, before returning for a FA Cup Second Qualifying Round tie and although Day would naturally like to win both of the double header Kent derbies, its points that makes prizes.

Welling went down to a surprise 2-1 defeat at Boreham Wood last Monday and a result lost top spot to Woking 24 hours later after the Surrey side beat Bromley 4-2 at Hayes Lane.

“Obviously, this Saturday we have to try to bounce back,” said Day.

“Hopefully we can and the Cup game, anything can happen in the Cup.

“Obviously we’ll see each other the week before – it’s two tough games and for me, two big games now.”

It is always difficult for one team to beat the same team twice within a short period of time and when asked which of the two games he would like to win the most, Day replied, “I think for me the league’s our bread and butter, so I’d take three points over winning in the FA Cup.”

Day added: “Like I say, after the first game they’ll have a rough idea how we play and the way we set up and likewise so we’ve got enough players’ to maybe rotate it around a little bit and change it to give them a bit of a problem but first of all we’ve got to worry about Saturday and get back a little bit of games where we can be consistent.”

Day added: “We know their players and they probably know our players.  I like Mark (Goldberg) and Murray (Jones) and they’re good coaches and good people.

“It will be a good game.  I’ll enjoy it and look forward to it and hopefully we can get the result that we want.”

Bromley boss Mark Goldberg, meanwhile, wants his side to bounce back after their midweek defeat to Woking.

“We’ve got a lot of hard work to do between now and Welling,” said Goldberg, now in his third spell in charge at Hayes Lane.

“I’m sure Welling will be excited about the opportunity to playing us right now, having conceded eight goals in two games.

“We have to make sure we respond and that we’re hard to beat.”

When asked which game out of the two he would like to win the most, Goldberg replied, “I’m only going to take one game at a time.  We’ve got to get back to winning ways and I’m only interested in Saturday’s game.”
