We know we're not going to win it, admits Abbott
SITTINGBOURNE boss Gary Abbott has conceded that the league title is now out of his side’s grasp, writes Stephen McCartney.
Cray Wanderers remain six points clear at the top of the Ryman League Division One South table following their 3-1 win at Bourne Park yesterday.
Abbott’s men slipped one place outside the play-off’s, but victory over Leatherhead at Bourne Park tomorrow night, will see them leapfrog over Fleet Town into fifth.
But as his side are now ten points adrift of Ian Jenkins’ table-toppers, Abbott, speaking to BBC Radio Kent yesterday, now targets the play-off’s as a way of clinching promotion.
“Today was about are we going to win it or not, and no, we’re not going to win it,” admitted Abbott.
“We’re not out of it, mathematically we’re not out of it, but I can’t see Cray losing three or four games and we’ve got to win our last ten games.
“We know we’re not going to win it, we’ve got to go into the play-off’s now. We’re good enough to get into the play-off’s, but Monday is a massive game now.
“I was more worried about the Leatherhead game than today really. We weren’t up for it from the warm-up today, I could see that, but we’ll go Monday and get three points.”
