We'll be better prepared next season, says Lisney

Thursday 01st April 2010
FISHER boss Gary Lisney says he wants his side to finish their campaign with seven wins from their last remaining seven outings, writes Stephen McCartney.

Lisney was a proud man last night as his side were knocked out of the London Senior Cup at the quarter-final stage by a youthful Croydon Athletic side.

Striker Cedric Abraham netted his first goal of the season to give the Kent League side a first half lead, before Croydon Athletic levelled through Gary Noel’s 80th minute finish.

Battling for every ball, Fisher were denied a semi-final pay-day at AFC Wimbledon as Croydon Athletic won 5-4 after 12 penalties after Lloyd Boateng and Abraham had their efforts saved by Mark Fox.

It would be fair to say that Fisher have saved their better performances for the London Senior Cup this season as wins over Kinsbury London Tigers, Haringey Borough and Cray Wanderers (on penalties) set up last night’s game.

However, in the league, the Fish have only Lordswood below them in the table, and Lisney wants his side to replicate their Cup exploits during their bread and butter games in the Bulmers Cider Kent League.

Looking ahead to Saturday’s trip to fourth-placed Sevenoaks Town, Lisney told www.kentishfootball.co.uk : “Our league form has been indifferent, to be fair.  We didn’t have the best of starts to the season but we went on a bit of a run winning games and drawing games then we went on a fairly long run where we couldn’t get a win or a draw and we lost a few.

“But we’re picking back up now but the cup run demonstrates to me we’re not a bad side and we can compete and our cup run has sort of said to me that we’ve not done ourselves justice in the league.”

Lisney will asses the fitness of his brave hearts following last night’s heroics ahead of their trip to Greatness Park on Saturday.

They then welcome Deal Town to Champion Hill Stadium on Easter Monday (3pm), before ending their campaign against Norton Sports (away), Holmesdale (away), Herne Bay (away), Erith & Belvedere (home) and a home clash against Holmesdale.

“I want to win the next seven games,” said Lisney. “I’m sure it can be done, if we apply ourselves right then we’ll give ourselves every opportunity to go and win every game.

“I said when I took the job at the beginning of the season, we’ve reformed, starting with absolutely nothing, we have no playing budget whatsoever and to build a team that’s going to compete in this league is going to take a bit of time.

“We’ve got a number of young players who have had their first taste of senior football this year and they will be better prepared and so much better for their experience this year.

“Hopefully the players will push on a little bit next year and perform more consistently.  That’s probably the secret for us and if we put in performances like that we’ll do alright.”
