We'll find out a bit more ourselves against Croydon Athletic - Ward
Sunday 01st November 2009
RAMSGATE boss Jim Ward has issued his in-form side a challenge to beat big-spending Croydon Athletic on Saturday, writes Stephen McCartney.
Fresh from their impressive 2-0 win (with ten-men) over a Fleet Town side that have won their last ten league and cup games, Ward has challenged his side to claim three points when the two sides meet at Southwood Stadium on Saturday.
Ward, who was asked to leave the technical area moments after his skipper, Warren Schulz, was shown a second yellow card at fortress Calthorpe Park in the second qualifying round of the FA Carlsberg Trophy on Saturday, told www.kentishfootball.co.uk: “Massive game, isn’t it? They’re favourites to win our league, they’re still favourites.
“We’ll find out a bit more about ourselves next week. I’m looking forward to it now, the game’s can’t come quicker.
“We’re actually going to train three times this week, so they’re going to train Monday night, Tuesday night and Thursday night, and one of those nights will be a beach run.”
A penalty from striker, Gary Mickelborough, who has now scored ten goals this season, and a stunning 35-yard volley with the outside of his left boot from Liam Quinn, inflicted a rare defeat for Fleet Town, on their slope at Calthorpe Park on Saturday.
And Quinn, who took the captain’s armband when Schulz was red-carded, is relishing the chance to continue the side’s good run of form.
“If we can play like we did today, I don’t think we’ll have any problems,” the former Dover Athletic and Whitstable Town versatile player told www.kentishfootball.co.uk.
Like Ramsgate, Croydon Athletic are nicknamed “The Rams”, and Quinn believes the Thanet variety will come out on top.
“They started the season ridiculously well, scored a ridiculous amount of goals in the first few games, but we can beat anyone on our day,”
