We’re trying to put our name on the map on and off the field, says Welling Town chairman Kevin Oakes, who launches £35 rest of the season ticket for Non-League Day
WELLING TOWN chairman Kevin Oakes is offering potential supporters a season ticket for just £35 – if they attend Saturday’s FA Vase First Round tie at home to Erith & Belvedere.
The Boots play their home games at Bayliss Avenue in Thamesmead and Danny Wakeling’s side are in fifth-place in the Southern Counties East Football League Premier Division – the ninth-tier of English football – and have collected 17 points from their nine league outings.
It’s Non-League Day on Saturday, where fans of Premier League and Football League club’s can experience a game at their local non-league club and the Welling Town chairman is taking full advantage.
“With a shared gate for the Cup we’re limited as to what offers we can give on the day itself, so we’d like to extend a season long offer for anyone attending this Saturday or buying during the next 10 days,” said Mr Oakes.
“Anyone attending this Saturday, or purchasing via our website in the next 10 days, can acquire a “Rest of the Season” season ticket for just £35. With 14 home league games remaining this season, that represents just £2.50 per game.
“But it gets better, purchased ahead of Saturday, we’ll cover your entry this weekend for you, effectively giving you the rest of the season’s league games for the equivalent of just £28 - £2 per game.
“The season ticket is fully transferable to one other individual as well, in the event you cannot attend but a friend wants to take advantage of your ticket, which is a great way to support your local side in between supporting your main side elsewhere during the rest of the 2019-20 season.”
Welling Town were founded in 2014 and played their games on a council rented pitch in Bexley and have progressed via the London & Kent Suburban League, Kent County League and one season in the Southern Counties East Football League First Division before winning the title at the first attempt and this is the highest level that the club have played at.
“Non-League Day is a great initiative to support club’s like ours all across the UK and put them to the forefront on a weekend when there are no Premier League games and the focus of football fans’ attention can turn to their local sides, whatever their level,” added Mr Oakes.
“Having progressed quickly, we aren’t fortunate, yet, to have a real supporter base, but we’re trying to put our name on the map on and off the field.
“We’d welcome and encourage local football fans, maybe those usually at Millwall or Charlton Athletic, who haven’t been down to watch us play, to do so this coming Saturday against Erith & Belvedere in The FA Vase First Round.
“They will certainly enjoy the game as both sides play attractive football and have had some decent battles in the last 12 months and most will be pleasantly surprised at the standard of football as there are many, many good players throughout the Southern Counties East Football League and indeed the upper levels of the Kent County Football League.
“In doing so we hope that people will return more regularly to watch us and other local sides and support the excellent work of so many volunteers at both club’s and the Leagues themselves.
“If you are free on Saturday and your usual team are not playing, pick a local non-league game and try it out. Hopefully, it’ll be ourselves so we hope to see you on Saturday.”
Erith & Belvedere, who finished runners-up to Welling Town in the First Division last season, currently sit in thirteenth-place in the pecking order in the Premier Division, with 10 points from as many games.
